On this day the twenty six of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four at ten o’clock in the morning, we the undersigned Notary Public duly admitted and sworn in and for the Province of Canada hereintofore called Province of Lower Canada and residing in the Parish of Sainte Catherine of Fossambault , District of Quebec and before the Reverend Messire Hugh Paisley Curè of the said Parish of Sainte Catherine of Fossambault and Mr. Peter Cullen of the said Parish witnesses having been called and requested mandés et requis by John Darmody farmer went to the residence of Messsire Hugh Paisley Curé being in the presbytery of the church of the Parish of Sainte Catherine of Fossambault, we found the said John Darmody in a sitting room in apparently good health of body and sound and perfect mind, memory and understanding who desired us the said Notary in presence of the undersigned witnesses to write down and receive in due form of Law his last will and Testament which he instantly published, made, and dictated unto us the said notary in manner and form following, that is to say,
First, I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping and believing a remission of my sins by the merits and mediations of Jesus Christ my Blessed Saviour and my body I commit to the earth to be buried according to the rights of the Catholic Church with a (service) Grand Mass and five low masses for the repose of my soul.
2º I leave to my daughter Ann Darmody, a cow.
3º I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Darmody, wife of John Campbell, farmer of the Parish of Sainte Catherine, a sum of five shillings, and to Johanna Darmody and Edward Darmody my son and daughter the sum of five shillings each.
4º The remainder of all my property moveable and immovable I leave and bequeath to my son Michael Darmody on condition that he shall prove a kind and good son to me and my wife, his mother as long as we live and when she shall die he will bury her the same as myself with one grand mass and five low masses for the repose of her soul.
It was thus published, made, dictated, and named word by word by the said John Darmody Testator unto us the said notary at the said Parish of Sainte Catherine of Fossambault on the day and year first above written and the said present will and testament having been read in full over and again lu et relu to the said testator by the said notary in presence of the undersigned witnesses, the said testator did declare that he had perfectly heard and understood the same, found it to contain his true last will and intention, therefore persisted therein and declared that he could not write nor sign his name so requested to do so by the said notary but made his mark in presence of witnesses in faith and testimony of the premises.
