On the twenty ninth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety four, before me Cyrille Renaud Notary residing in the Parish of St. Ambrosie of Jeune Lorette personally came and appeared Mary Hartery, wife of John McLaughin, Farmer residing in the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested us the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law her last will and testament which she has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:
1º I most willingly resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator in the humble hope that he will receive it to his favor through the sole merits and intercession of Jesus Christ my Saviour.
2º I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my executor herein after named as soon as possible after my death.
3º I give and bequeath to my husband all money that I can have in the Banks.
4º I give and bequeath to my two sons by equal share Francis Joseph McLaughlin and Thomas George McLaughlin all my other moveable and immoveable properties that I constitute my universal legatees.
5º I nominate, constitute and appoint my said husband John McLaughlin as Executor of this my will.
6º I revoke all wills and codicils I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.
The present will was thus declared by the said Testator to the said Notary in presence of Thomas Hartery and Mark McLaughlin both farmers of St. Gabriel of Valcartier & Ste. Catherine witnesses for the effects of these presents, read to the said Testatrix by said Notary in presence of said witnesses who declared to understand it fully and persist therein.
Done and passed at the residence of the said Testatrix under Notarial Number eight hundred and seventy seven. And after the reading of these presents the said Notary and witnesses have signed in presence of the Testatrix and in presence of each other, the said Testatrix having declared her inability by sickness has made her mark in presence of Notary and said witnesses.

Notes by Patricia Balkcom: Mary died two weeks later at the age of sixty years. The two sons mentioned in the will were her two youngest sons. She and John had seven known children.
