Marriage* | Patrick O'Scanlen3 | |
Anecdote* | 25 January 1847 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; The Maid of the Mountain, as Abigail White was known lived on Lot #10 on the way to Pinkney's Mountain. She was found dead leaning over her table while writing this letter to her husband whom she thought was still in England and would come to join her the following year. His name was Pat O'Scanlon and for more than 20 years she had disguised her name and took the name of Abigail Payne Rabbit Whyte. The Letter: Dear Pat, I am ritin' this in hopes that you will get it to let you know that I am true to you to the ind and that the prisent year, God be praised, will be your last in prison. It has been a lonesome time, dear Pat, but Glory be to God, it's a great farm I've got, and it's happy you'll be whin you get here for its a great country entirely. It's the Maid of the Mountain I am, dear Pat, for I've kept our secret, and it's several of the lads, fine men, Pat, and trew (sic), that would marry me, but I put them off with one excuse and another for it's thinkin (sic) of you, Pat, I am, and the little dead one. They think it's hard I am, Pat, but it's you who knows best, for it's always of you I am dreaming of nights and the days and nights are long without you" - here the letter ended abruptly. According to the book, her husband (Patrick O'Scanlen) who was an English soldier, stationed in Quebec, became drunk in glee when his wife told him she had $400 to buy farmland in Quebec. While he was drunk, he struck an officer and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was let out after 9 years and he began to search for his wife. An Indian who he met in a Quebec Hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia recognized the description of the woman as Abigail. He arranged for another man to take him to his wife but as they entered her cabin, she was dead. He called to her "Maggie, Maggie, dear, I have come at last."3 |
