| (Witness) Baptism | 12 October 1813 | Elizabeth O'Neill; Kilkullen Catholic Church, Kilkullen, County Kildare, Leinster Province, Ireland; Baptismal record - Anne Neal baptized 12 October 1813 in Kilcullen Catholic Church. Parents were John and Judith Neal of Gilbinstown (County Wicklow on the Kildare border) Significantly Wm. Duff was listed as the godfather along with Catherine Bagmer as godmother. It appears that Anne and Bridget Neale are of the same family, and very possibly our family. Gilbinstown is only a few kilometers from Milltown where Bridget was baptized. Later records in Quebec list a child born about 1814 in Ireland as Elizabeth, not Anne. Could this be a clerical error by the priest or could she have been named Anne Elizabeth? No other children were baptized in this parish or in Dunlavin after 1817 with these parents listed and this lends credence that this is the family that then migrated to Quebec.1 |

BEFORE ME, the undersigned, one of the Justices of our Sovereign Lady the Queen assigned to keep the Peace within the District of Quebec, this seventeenth day of September in the year of our Lord Christ, one thousand eight hundred and forty nine personally came and appeared James Cullen of the place called Stoneham, farmer. Who being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God, doth declare, depose, and say, as follows: - to wit, on Sunday the ninth instant I was in Thomas Wright’s house at Stoneham when we perceived James Duffy and Thomas Duffy and John Duffy chasing James Cowan and his family in Mr. Cowan’s own field. I perceived that Mr. James Cowan was running toward Mr. Wright’s house pursued by James, John and Thomas Duffy. I went out of the home with Mr. Thomas Wright and I saw James Duffy strike James Cowan with an iron hay fork over the head. Cowan fell on his knees, then James Duffy jostled him down again and John Duffy lifted a wrightly (?) hand stick with a big lump at the end of it and struck him twice over the head when he was down. I came down to Mr. Cowan and lifted him up. His face was all covered with blood flowing from the cuts that were inflicted by the blows he had received from James and John Duffy and Mr. Wright brought him into his house. Further deponent saith not and hath signed. Sworn before me, at the City of Quebec, on the day and year first above written. Who being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God, doth declare, depose, and say, as follows: - wit, I reside in the extra parochial place called Stoneham in the County and District of Quebec and am neighbor to one James Duffy. On Sunday the ninth instant Margaret Flinn came running into my house and told me that James Duffy was beating my two sons whom I had sent to turn off his cattle from my grain. I perceived that my eldest son had his face covered with blood and was running away pursued by Duffy. As soon as Duffy saw me he stopped and turned towards his house. I was going toward my house when I saw James Duffy with his two brothers John Duffy and Thomas Duffy running towards me and shouting. Being in fear of my life and perceiving John Wright with others standing in Mr. Thomas Wright’s fields I made towards them calling on them to protect me. I had picked up an iron hay fork which I believe Margaret Flinn had thrown to me. I jumped over a fence and told the two brothers James and Thomas Duffy who were pursuing me to stand back. XXXX then making over the fence I ran on towards John Wright. They overtook me, here James Duffy seized hold of the fork I had in my hand and struck me with it on the left side of the head; the blow completely severed the skin, I was stunned and fell on my knees. I was struck again and fell down. When down I was again struck on the head but cannot say by whom. Marg Flinn then came up and with the help of James Cullen , I believe, took me into Mr. Thomas Wright’s house. I received three severe cuts on my head from which I bled profusely. I have since that time been confined to my house and under the care of Doctor Joseph Painchaud who examined my wounds. Further deponent saith not and hath signed. | Name Variation | Judith Duff3 | |
| Nickname | Julia Duffy | |
| Birth* | circa November 1786 | Leinster Province, Ireland; Research on Birth Date: - Julia Duffy died on August 25, 1871. Both her gravestone and burial record state she was 85 years old at the time of her death, which indicates a birthdate between August 1785 and August 1786. - The January 1852 census lists her as 65 years old, which also suggests a birth year of 1786. - In the April 1861 census, she is recorded as 73 years old, implying a birth year of 1788. - Despite extensive searching, she does not appear in the 1871 census; however, all of her children are listed, and she is not found in Valcartier or Ancienne Lorette, places linked to her burial. It is suspected she was present in Ancienne Lorette but omitted from the census. - Based on this evidence, the most likely year of birth is 1786, though this would mean she was 46 when her last child was born - relatively advanced age for childbirth at that time, but still possible. See the most recent information in the baptismal tag for additional analysis. Based on this research, this birthdate (c Nov. 1786 is being used), however, certainity has not been established.4,5,6 |
| Baptism | 21 November 1786 | Kilkullen Catholic Church, Kilkullen, County Kildare, Leinster Province, Ireland; Analysis of baptismal research: - Only one baptism found for a Julia or Judith Duff in surviving Dublin city registers (1780-1805): baptized January 1781 at St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral to Peter and Ellinor Duff, sponsors Walter Golding and Anne Mulloy. If this is correct, Judith would have been nearly 50 when her daughter Catherine was born in Canada in 1830—this seems unlikely. - Another record for Judith Duff: baptized November 21, 1786 at Kilcullen RC, Kildare, to Patritius (Patrick) and Anna Duff, sponsors Peter Kane & Maria Clarke. This is a distinct possibility. This latter date matches Canadian records of her birth year. It is in the same parish as a baptism for a John O'Neill and also Navin (Nevin) families lived in this area (Sarah, Judith's sister, married a John Nevin from Kildare in Dublin. In later years, a John and Judith O'Neill from this area had two daughters - Bridget in 1817 and Ann in 1813. The Bridget baptism aligns with Canadian records for the family. The Ann baptism is approximately the correct date, but the child in Canada was called Elizabeth. - Negative considerations include that Judith's gravestone indicates she was from County Dublin. (Could this be a mistake made after her death by the person commissioning her gravestone? There was a Duff family living in County Wicklow during this time and this church would have been the closest to them. Additionally, as this church was in the Diocese of Dublin, could that be why her origin was listed as Dublin on the gravestone?) The couple who are listed as parents of Judith in 1786, Patrick and Ann Duff, also had two sons named James (born 1789 & 1792). Judith and John named a son "James" but not "Patrick." They did not name any daughters Ann, however, that baptism in 1813 of an Ann could possibly be attributed to a daughter who might have been named Ann Elizabeth and called only Elizabeth.6 Witness: Peter Kane Witness: Maria Clarke |

A marriage record was found for John Nevin and Sarah Duff (believed to be the sister of Judith) in this parish in 1822. Also searched Kilkullen Church in Kildare from 1810-1816, no marriage for this couple found.1,7,8 |
| Immigration | circa April 1818 | John O'Neill; The following excerpt from a land petition written on 11 May 1819 states: "That your petitioner left Ireland and arrived in this Country in the last spring with the view of obtaining lands and settling as a farmer to which business he had been brought up in his native country..."9 |
| (Witness) Census | 1821 | John O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; There was a Census taken for Valcartier in 1821 and John is listed as living on Concession #4 with 2 houses (this possibly means a house and a barn). This is somewhat confusing because in previous and future documents, there is no evidence that he lived in the 4th Concession, only in the 5th. The Census goes on to say that John has 1 male child, 2 female children, and 3 male servants. These servants are likely men that he has hired to help him clear the land. He owns a horse, 4 oxen, 6 cows and 4 cows and he has now cleared 30 acres on the 4th Concession and 2o acres on the 5th Concession.10 |
| (Witness) Census | 1824 | John O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "John Oneil", Family #50, age 33, 3 males (assume this to be John, and sons, Thomas and James) and 5 females in his house (assume this to be Julia, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Bridget and Sarah - who is the other female?), settlement date 1818, has 87 arpents (almost 87 acres) under cultivation (one of the largest number in the settlement). Includes: 30 minots of oats, 4 minots of peas, 60 minots of potatoes, 2 arpents sown in turnips, 16 arpents in timothy, 1/2 arpent each in hemp and flax. He has 3 cows, 2 pigs, and 1 gelding. He produced 100 minots of wheat, 400 minots of potatoes, 200 minots of turnips, 1000 bundles of hay and clover, 4 minots of carrots, and 500 lbs. of butter. He has peas in production but they are still green and have not been harvested.11 |

| (Witness) Will | 13 October 1841 | John O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; 13th October 1841 Last Will and Probate of John O’Neill From: Quebec Archives Holographic Will Collection On the thirteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and forty one, I, John O’Neil undersigned being sick and weak in body but of sound mind, memory, and understanding and not knowing when it may please God to call me out of this world do make constituted and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following to wit: 1st I bequeath my soul to Almighty God hoping that he will receive in his great mercy and forgive me my sins. 2nd I leave my body to the earth from whence it was taken hoping that my loving wife and children will give me a Christian burial. 3rd I leave all my immoveable property to my two sons Thomas and James O’Neil to be enjoyed together by them in common as long as they shall live together and if it happens that they separate, the landed property will be divided equally between them according to its value by two or three arbitrators; provided that my dear wife Judith Duffy be decently kept and supported by them as long as she shall choose to live with them, or if she wishes to live by herself, they will provide the following support for her as long as she lives, viz: They will give her two acres of land upon which they will build a house and a stable; provide her with a cow which must be replaced in case of death and furnish fother or forage for her cow and cultivate her piece of ground. Moreover they will give her each of them yearly the sum of three pounds currency. 4th I leave all my stock of cattle and all my moveable property to my said two sons equally, on conditions that they will give to my daughter Sera O’Neil two cows and the foal I have at present at the time of her marriage and likewise two cows to each of my other daughters, Margaret and Catharine O’Neil at the time of their marriage; and if any of them do not marry I hope they will live in peace with their Brothers who will be obliged to furnish them with a home in case of sickness and take care of them accordingly. 5th My will is that the eight pounds which are due to John Wilson shall be paid on demand. I recommend all my children to be obedient and loving to their mother and agreeable among themselves and my eldest son Thomas is to be considered the conductor of affairs after my death and I recommend my other children to be submissive to him. The above, I do declare to be my last will and testament which I have heard read and have signed in presence of the witness viz the Reverend H. Paisley, Ferdinand Murphy and James Donohoe who have also signed with me. Done and passed in my dwelling home at Valcartier on the day and year aforesaid two words raized are null, two words in the margin are good. “John O’Neill” “H. Paisley, priest” “Ferdinand Murphy” “James Donohoe” ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Transcribed by Patricia Balkcom, March 2011 My notes: Burial records, three weeks after the will was written, state that John was 48 years old. It appears that he was ill for sometime – since he had written the will three weeks before he died and at a relatively young age. Did he have consumption (tuberculosis)? When he died he left Julia, his wife, and seven surviving children, aged 11 through 27. The two eldest children, Elizabeth (married to John Wilson), and Bridget (married to Thomas Cassin) are not mentioned in the will presumably because they had already married and had husbands to care for them. The two boys, Thomas and James, who were left the land, were 21 and 18 when their father died. James sold his portion of the land to Thomas, five years later, in 1846. We have found James in Guelph, Ontario records by 1855. It is possible that he left Quebec after the land sale to find another type of work. Thomas, kept the land until 1864, he, his wife (Bridget Martin) and children and his mother, Julia, had relocated to Little River in 1863. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Proved before me at Quebec this 27th of November 1855. “J. Lelievre Transcribed by Patricia Balkcom, 14 January 2011 My Notes: The O’Neill’s moved to the farm at Little River shortly before they sold all of their land through this transaction. The Valcartier land had been in the family for over 40 years. It can only be assumed that Thomas believed the land at Little River would be more fertile and more productive than the Valcartier land. 19 |

| Burial* | 27 August 1871 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic Church, St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Copy of the church burial record for Julia O'Neill Duffy. Translation from French: "The twenty seventh of August, one thousand and eight hundred and seventy one. We, the undersigned priest, Vicar of Saint Ambroise have interred in the cemetery of St. Gabriel de Valcartier the body of Julia Duffy, widow of John O'Neill, deceased at Ancienne Lorette, the twenty fifth of the current month, aged eighty five years. Present: Thomas O'Neill and Claude Guerin Guil. Giroux, Priest From Gerry Neville: " John O'Neill and Judith Duffy are buried in Valcartier. A few years ago a Mr. Griffin and a Mr. Conway, while visiting the cemetery, found the O'Neill monument thrown over the bank at the cemetery along with a number of other old broken monuments. I know that they retrieved the O'Neill monument that was split in two pieces. Mr. Conway told me that on the monument it gave John O'Neill's place of birth as County Kildare and Judith Duffy's place of birth as County Dublin." Don Michaud has said that he has seen to it that both of the stones have been repaired and replaced in the cemetery. However, he states that the date of Julia's death on the stone states 1872 - will research whether the church records are wrong or if the stone is wrong. The stone states: "Sacred to the memory of Julia Duffy who died 25 August 1872, Native of County Dublin, Ireland, And Relict of the Late John O'Neill, Aged 85 years." Note: The gravestone states she died in 1872 which appears to wrong based on the order of the burial records in the church records.21,5,23 |
