| Marriage* | 20 April 1822 | John Navin; St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Westland Row, Dublin, Dublin County, Leinster Province, Ireland; Transcription from the church records: "Married on 20th April 1822 in the Roman Catholic parish of St. Andrew’s Westland Row, Joannasm [John] Nevin & Sarah Duff. (sic) Guliulmo [William] Griffin & Margarita Bennet (witnesses)." No evidence has been found for children born to this couple, suggesting the liklihood that this is the same couple that emigrated and were living in Valcartier by 1823. Sarah’s maiden name was recorded as Duff, rather than Duffy. As marriages usually took place in the home parish of the bride, it would suggest Sarah Duff’s home parish was St. Andrew’s, which is located on Westland Row in Dublin city and is still standing today. A search of the St. Andrew’s church marriage registers from 1800 to 1815 has not found the marriage of a Julia or Judith Duff1822 in this parish. 4 |

| Note* | In Catherine O'Neill's marriage record to Garrett Kindelan, it is stated that the witness is John Navin, her uncle. This confirms that Julia and Sarah Duffy were sisters. | |
| Birth* | circa 1796 | Ireland; Since her sister, Julia, was born in Dublin County, it is likely she was born there also.2 |
| (Witness) Baptism | 10 December 1817 | Bridget O'Neill; Dunlavin Catholic Church, Dunlavin, County Wicklow, Leinster Province, Ireland; A baptismal record states that Bridget Neal, daughter of John and Judith Neale of Milltown was baptized on 10 December 1817 with the witnesses as Sarah Duffe and Bartlet Buckly. The baptism occured in the Dunlavin Roman Catholic Church which is in the diocese of Dublin and is now called Saint Nicholas of Myra (original church was built in 1815). Dunlavin is located in County Wicklow and it borders County Kildare. There is evidence of a Duff family living in Miltown. Is Sarah Duffe, the godmother, the sister of Judith Duffy? Given the location (close to Kildare) and the godmother's name, it is strongly suggestive that this is the daughter of our John and Judith. There is a baptismal record for a Judith Duffy in 1786 in Kilcullen which would likely have been the church used by people from Milltown before the church was built in Dunlavin. There is a Neale family that had children baptized in Kilcullen - one of them being a John Neal, baptized in 1788 so it seems possible that this area was the place where the O'Neill and Duffy families lived. John Navin, who married Judith's sister, Sarah, was also from County Kildare according to his gravestone. There are several Nevin (sic) families in the Kilkullen church records.3 |

Thus done, made and dictated word by word by the said Sarah Duffy to the said Benjamin Lelievre, the said undersigned Notary in the presence of the said above named witnesses, in this day and year, first above written, under the number one thousand four hundred and forty and after having read and re-read the present last will and testament to the said Sarah Duffy, which she declared well to understand, she hath persisted therein as being her last will and meaning and hath declared that she cannot write nor sign her name, but made her mark by a cross. The said James Flinn also declaring that he cannot write and sign his name, but made his mark by a cross, having the said John Jack signed with me the Notary in faith and testimony of the promises. Words struck out are null. Marginal notes approved are good. Sarah Duffy, her mark James Flinn, his mark John Jack, his signature Benjamin Lelievre, his signature. Transcribed by Patricia Balkcom, 22 October 2010 My Notes: This is an interesting will. Judith leaves her main possessions to a 6 year old grand-daughter (Bridget Margaret Corrigan). In the same year as this will was written, Bridget’s parents, James Corrigan and Ann Navin, leave Valcartier and move to Wisconsin. Four years later, in the 1871 Valcartier census, Bridget is living with her grandmother, Sarah Duffy, and she is not listed in the 1870 Wisconsin census with her parents. Apparently, Bridget stayed to live with her grandmother and did not go to Wisconsin (this seems unusual for a 6 year old child). Sarah Duffy did not die 19 December 1882, fifteen years after this will was written. It appears that, her only child, Ann Navin, who is mentioned in the will, predeceased her sometime between 1880 and 1882 when James Corrigan remarried. Granddaughter, Bridget Margaret is not listed in the 1881 Valcartier census and at this time I have not found either a death or marriage certificate for her. It is possible that there Sarah might have made a later will after her daughter died. Research into looking for the probate of this will would help to answer this question and also possibly give information as to what happened to Bridget Margaret.10 |

| Will | 28 October 1882 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; 0 28th October 1882 Will of Sarah Duffy (widow of John Nevin) From records of Notary Paul Picard, No. 458 Quebec Archives Original Records On this day, the twenty eight of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty two (1882), Before me the undersigned Notary Public for the Province of Quebec in the Dominion of Canada, residing in the parish of St. Ambroise of La Jeune Lorette and the witnesses hereinafter named and subscribed, Personally came and appeared Sarah Duffy, widow of the late John Navin, residing at the residence of James Rolph, farmer of the parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, the said Sarah Duffy being in weak bodily health but of sound mind, memory, and understanding as to us appeared by her manner and conversation hath requested of the said Notary to receive and reduce into writing this, her Last Will and Testament which I, the said Notary, in the presence of the said witnesses have taken down as dictated to us by the said Sarah Duffy as aforesaid word for word and as follows, that is to say, Iº I recommend my soul to God asking him to give me the everlasting beatitude by the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour. IIº I wish that after my lawful and just debts shall have been paid and satisfied with which I hereby charge my Executor hereinafter named a sum of money be paid to the Curé of the parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier to be by him employed for the saying of one hundred low masses of "requiem" for the repose of my soul. IIIº I give and bequeath unto Bridget Margaret Corrigan, daughter of James B. Corrigan, of the town Cedarburg, County of Ozaukee in the State of Wisconsin the sum of one hundred dollars if she remains in the convent of the Good Shepherd and not otherwise. IVº I do hereby give and bequeath unto (Kate) Catherine O'Neil, wife of Garret Kindlen, butcher, formerly of the parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, now residing in the parish of St. Sauveur of Quebec all the remainder of my real and personal property and all moveables that I may possess of & to have and to hold the said remainder of my property hereby given to the own proper use, behoof, and benefit of her, the said Catherine O'Neil as aforesaid and in full and absolute property from the day of my death. Vº And for the execution of the present, my Last Will and Testamnet I do hereby nominate and appoint the Reverend Father John O'Farrell, Curé of the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier in favor of whom, I do, in conformity to the Law and Custom of this Province hereby deseize and divest myself of all my property for the ends hereof hereby revoking all other wills, testaments or codicils that I may have made prior to the pressure to which alone I do adhere as containing my true intentions and Last Will. Thus done and dictated word for word & published and declared by the said Sarah Duffy aforesaid for & as her Last Will & Testament to and in the presence of the said Notary and James Rolph and James Hicks, farmers of the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, witnesses expressly called for the effect hereof at the residence of the said James Rolph on the day and year first above written under the number of four hundred and fifty eight of the original deeds of the said Notary. In faith and testimony whereof the said Testatrix having declared not to know how to write or sign her name when requested so to do as to these presents first duly read according to law, set and made her mark of a cross in the presence of the said Notary and of the said witnesses who have also hereunto set and subscribed their respective names & signatures. Words erased are null. Marginal notes approved are good. Sarah Duffy, her mark; James Hicks, his signature; James Rolph, his signature; P. Picard, Notary, his signature (Transcribed by Gerry Neville - May 2011) Notes by Patricia Balkcom: Notes by Patricia Balkcom: In her first will, 15 years earlier, Sarah left her estate to her sister-in-law, Ann Navin and Ann’s children. Ann died about 1881 before this second will was written. Sarah now leaves all of her estate to her two nieces (Bridget Margaret Corrigan – daughter of Ann Navin) and Catherine O’Neill Kindelan (daughter of Judith Duffy, sister to Sarah). It is obvious that Sarah was especially close to Bridget and that as a child, Bridget lived with Sarah for a period of time, even though her family had moved to Wisconsin. It is also obvious that Sarah and her husband, the late John Navin, were very religious, as they left money to the church for masses and Sarah stipulated that Bridget must remain in the church to receive her inheritance. Sarah died 2 months after writing this will.12 Witness: Bridget Margaret Corrigan Witness: Catherine O'Neill |

BEFORE ME, the undersigned, one of the Justices of our Sovereign Lady the Queen assigned to keep the Peace within the District of Quebec, this seventeenth day of September in the year of our Lord Christ, one thousand eight hundred and forty nine personally came and appeared James Cullen of the place called Stoneham, farmer. Who being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God, doth declare, depose, and say, as follows: - to wit, on Sunday the ninth instant I was in Thomas Wright’s house at Stoneham when we perceived James Duffy and Thomas Duffy and John Duffy chasing James Cowan and his family in Mr. Cowan’s own field. I perceived that Mr. James Cowan was running toward Mr. Wright’s house pursued by James, John and Thomas Duffy. I went out of the home with Mr. Thomas Wright and I saw James Duffy strike James Cowan with an iron hay fork over the head. Cowan fell on his knees, then James Duffy jostled him down again and John Duffy lifted a wrightly (?) hand stick with a big lump at the end of it and struck him twice over the head when he was down. I came down to Mr. Cowan and lifted him up. His face was all covered with blood flowing from the cuts that were inflicted by the blows he had received from James and John Duffy and Mr. Wright brought him into his house. Further deponent saith not and hath signed. Sworn before me, at the City of Quebec, on the day and year first above written.
