BE IT REMEMBERED, that on the first day of July in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty two at the said City of Quebec, in the said District, John McLaughlin and John Bowles, of Valcartier, farmers, is convicted before the undersigned, one of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said District, for that they the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles, did on the twentieth day of June last past, at the place called Valcartier, in this District, violently assault, strike and beat one Michael Farrell of the Parish of Ste Catherine de Fossambault, farmer; without provocation or cause and against the form of the Statue in such case made and provided.
AND I adjudge the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles for their said offence to forfeit and pay the sum of fifteen shillings to be paid and applied according to law, and also to pay to the said Michael Farrell, the sum of four pounds ten shillings and eight pence for his costs in this behalf; and if the said several sums be not paid forthwith I adjudge the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles to be imprisoned in the House of Correction at the said City of Quebec, in the said District, for the space of twelve days unless the said several sums and all costs and charges of Commitment and of convoying the said John McLaughlin and john Bowles to the said house of Conviction shall be sooner paid.

Court Case*April 1861David Maher; David Maher was killed by an axe by Michael Farrell. Michael was aquitted of manslaughter by reason of self-defense. Note that David Maher's brother, John Maher, was married to Michael Farrell's sister, Anastasia. Michael Farrell was charged 20 years later with the murder of Francis Conway in 1878 and was hanged for the offense. Death*10 January 1879Quebec City, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; On August 25, 1878 Michael Farrell shot and killed Francis Conway (his cousin) in the head, in front of witnesses, he was arrested and brought to trial. In October of 1878 he was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death by the jury. This was the last public hanging in the Province of Quebec. This was not the first man that Michael Farrell killed, in 1861 he killed David Maher (his cousin) with an axe, the jury found him not guilty and reduced the charge to self-defense.1
