(Witness) Death | 27 April 1916 | Marjorie Murphy; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Aged 6 years, died of the Spanish influenza. From a relative: " I remember my grandmother telling me that she remembered my grandpa sitting on a bench in the kitchen sharpening a scythe for the next day's work in the fields as Marjorie lay dying in the adjacent room and from time to time he would look up at her little cot and tears would stream down his cheeks as he sharpened and prayed. She passed away that evening. Since the funeral directors were inundated with death from the S.F. there was no way to have her embalmed so Grandma just laid her out in a whitle little dress on a table in the living room and there was one night of viewing for the neighbors. A couple of days after, they took her body down to St. Gabriel's Church where a funeral Director met them and he transferred her body into a casket for burial."3 |
