On Sunday, August 25, 1878 Francis Conway was murdered by Michael Farrell, he was shot in the head .
Michael Farrell's trial started on October 30, 1878, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to death by hanging. It is also known that Francis Conway was not the only man murdered by Farrell. David Maher was also murdered by an axe, but Farrell was acquitted on the grounds of self-defence. This was the last Public Hanging in Quebec.2,3

On this first of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety five, before me Cyrille Renaud Public Notary residing in the Parish of St. Ambroise of Jeune Lorette and Anthony Maher, Farmer, and James Lannin, Farmer, both of St. Gabriel West of Valcartier, witnesses requested for the effect of these presents personally appeared Thomas Guilfoyle of the Parish of Ste. Catherine in the County of Portneuf, Farmer, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested us the said Notary and witnesses to write down and receive in due form of law his last will and testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:

Firstly and principally, I most willingly resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator in the humble hope that he will receive it to his favor through the sole merits and intercession of Jesus Christ my Saviour.

Secondly, I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my executrix hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Lannin all my moveable and immoveable properties wherever the same may be found and to whatever the same shall amount, hereby instituting my said wife my universal legatee.

Fourthly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife Mary Lannin executrix of my present will.

Fifthly, I revoke all wills and testaments & codicils I may have heretofore made and I desire the present to be my only last will and testament.

The present will was thus declared by the said Testator to the said Notary and by the Notary in the presence of witnesses aforesaid read to the said Testator who declared to understand it fully and persisted therein.

Done and passed at the residence of the said Testator in the Parish of Ste. Catherine on the day, month and year first herein before written under Notarial Number nine hundred and sixty five.

On this day, the seventeenth of October one thousand eight hundred and seventy two, before the undersigned Notaries Public for the Province of Quebec in the Dominion of Canada residing in the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared William Guilfoyle of the parish of St. Catherine of Fossambault, Farmer, who being of sound and disposing mind has made as follows his last will and testament:

I give, devise and bequeath to Margaret Griffin, my wife, all the property, real and personal, moveable and immoveable which I may die possessed of, instituting her my universal legatee at the charge of paying to James Guilfoyle, my son, a sum of two hundred dollars and to Ellen Guilfoyle, my daughter, a sum of eighty dollars.

This last will and testament received by Cy. Tessier the undersigned Notary in the presence of J.B. Delage, his colleague, having been read to the said Testator by the said Cy. Tessier Notary in the presence of his said colleague, he declared well to understand the same and has persisted in the same as containing his last will and intentions.

At Quebec, office of the said Cy. Tessier on the day & year above written under the number four thousand and sixty four.

In testimony whereof the Testator hath signed with and in the presence of the said Notaries who have also signed in the presence of the Testator and of one another, after the reading done according to law.

William died seven years later (30 December 1879) at the reported age 0f 80 years. He and Margaret had 10 known children, 3 of them died before this will was written (William, Catherine, and Margaret). Five children are not mentioned in the will – Mary, Thomas, Michael, Catherine and Judith.4
