On this second day of the month of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty three, before us the undersigned Public Notaries, for the Province of Quebec, residing at the City of Quebec, in the said Province personally came and appeared John Gurry, of the Town of Levis, Gentleman, in good bodily health and of sound mind, memory and judgment, as it appeared to us the said Notaries by his words & gestures, who declared that he had attended, at the office of Mtre. Samuel I. Glackmeyer one of the undersigned Notaries. for the purpose of making his last will and testament & which he did then and there make & dictate in the following manner, to wit:

1º I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, humbly beseeching forgiveness of all my sins.

2º I give, devise and bequeath unto Catherine, Bridget and Mary, three of my daughters issue of my marriage with the late Catherine Henry, my wife, one fourth each in the whole of the property I may die possessed of either moveable or immoveable, in full and absolute property.

3º I give, devise and bequeath unto Annie Gurry, my other daughter, wife of James Maloney, the use, usufruct & enjoyment of the other fourth of my said property during her life so long or so long as she does not return or reside with her said husband, in which last case, she shall lose all right to the usufruct of my said property bequeathed to her by my present last will. And after her death or in the event of returning to her said husband, then I give, devise & bequeath unto Jane Maloney, her daughter, the full & absolute property of the said fourth. And in the event of the death of the said Jane Maloney, before having attained the age of twenty one years, then I will & direct that the same revert to my said three daughters Catherine, Bridget, and Mary to be divided equally between them.

4º I do hereby cancel, & annul all other former wills I may heretofore have made.

5º I do hereby name and appoint my said daughter Catherine to be the tExecutrix of this my present last will & Testament into whose hands I hereby divest myself of the whole of my property according to law, it is my will and intention that the powers and immunities of my said Executrix shall not cease at the end of a year and a day, but shall last & continue so long as my present last will shall not have been fully carried out.

Thus it was made by the said John Gurry to me the said Samuel I. Glackmeyer on the said Notaries in the presence of Joseph G. Couture, his colleague, hereunto expressly called and the said present last will having been intelligibly by me the said Samuel I. Glackmeyer in the presence of my said colleague to the said Testator, he declared he understood the same well and persisted therein as containing truly his last will.

Thus done and passed at the said City of Quebec, in the office of Mtre. Samuel I. Glackmeyer in and of the undersigned Notaries the day, month and year first above written under the number nine thousand eight hundred and twenty seven. And signed by the said Testator in the presence of the said Notaries who have also signed in the presence of each other after the reading of these presents.

One marginal note approved good and five words expunged are null.

On this twenty third day of April, one thousand nine hundred and twenty one.
Before me Cyrille Renauld, Notary, residing in Loretteville, undersigned, personally appeared Mary Gurry, wife of James Bowles, farmer and butcher, residing at Ste. Catherine, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested me the said notary to write down and receive in one form of law her last will and testament which he has declared in a manner and form following that is to say
I desire that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my
Executor thereinafter named as soon after my death and one hundred (?) Masses for my soul after my death.
I desire that a monument for me and my husband be erected in the cemetery of the parish of St. Gabriel de Valcartier.
I give and bequeath unto my husband James Bowles the use, usufructs and enjoyment during his life of all my properties.
I give and bequeath unto my son, Hugh Charles Bowles the emplacements and buildings situated in the parish of Ste Catherine with the stock, horse, cow, etc., house furniture, except a part of this last for my daughter Margaret Mary Bowles.
Margaret Mary Bowles will be entitled by this will and the will of my husband, in the sum of two thousand and five hundred dollars, Michael Joseph Bowles in the sum of two thousand dollars, Harold in the sum of one thousand dollars and William Bowles in the sum of five hundred dollars and Mary Ethel in the sum of four thousand and five hundred dollars.
After the payments legatees herein before mentioned the balance of my properties will be divided by equal share between Margaret, Michael, Harold and William Bowles.
I nominate, constitute and appoint my husband James Bowles and my son James Bowles of Montreal as my executors and in the case of my husband predeceasing me my son James will be the sole executor and his charge shall continue during five years if needed for the execution of my will and the sale of the properties in Ottawa; the said executor having the power and authority for the sale of properties.
I revoke all will and codicil I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.
Done and passed at Ste Catherine in the house of said testator under notorial number eight thousand five hundred and eighty one. After the reading of the present will to the testator by the notary in presence of Napoleon Beaumont and Donat Beaumont, farmers, both of Ste Catherine, the testator, the notary and witnesses have signed in the presence of each others.

Note by Patricia Balkcom: Mary died about 6 weeks after writing this will. She died on the 6th of June 1921 at 60 years of age. Her seven youngest children are mentioned in the will. She and James Bowles had 14 children – four of whom died in one week in 1888. They were aged 2 through 5 years and died of diphtheria. Husband, James, died 2 months after Mary’s death.5

On this day the fourteenth of the month of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety one, before me Léonidas-Praxède Bernard, the undersigned Notary Public, residing in the Parish of Cap Santé, in the District and Province of Quebec, personally came, appeared and was present Mrs. Mary Gurry [Gorrie], the wife of Mr. David Cullen residing in the Parish of Ste. Catherine, who being in good health of body and of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding as appeared unto the undersigned Notary and witnesses, and desirous of settling her worldly affairs hath requested the said Notary to receive her present last will or testament in the manner and form following, to wit:

Firstly, I recommend my soul to Almighty God my Creator, the father of all mercies, humbly imploring at His Hands forgiveness of my sins through the gracious intercession of my Divine Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Secondly, I will and ordain to bury my body in the cemetery of the Parish when I shall decease, with an ordinary service and another anniversary service.

Thirdly, I will and direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid and satisfied by my Executor hereinafter named.

Fourthly, I will and bequeath unto my son, Mr. James Cullen, of the said Parish of Ste. Catherine, Farmer, all and singular the property real and personal, moveable and immoveable whatsoever of which I may be seized and possessed and wherever situate and being without any exception or reserve whatsoever.
     To have and to hold all and singular the said property real and personal, moveable and immoveable above bequeathed unto my said son, his heirs and assigns to the only proper use of the said James Cullen from and after my decease from thenceforth for ever, at the charge of my said son to board, lodge, wash, mind, and maintain as well in sickness as in health, in a proper and befitting manner, my beloved husband Mr. David Cullen, he the said David Cullen working for the benefit and profit of my said son, Mr. James Cullen.
     And further at the charge by my said son to board, lodge, wash, mind and maintain each of his brothers and sisters, my said children as long as they will not be provided in any manner whatsoever, they my said children working for the profit of my said son Mr. James Cullen.

And as for the execution of this my present last will, I do hereby nominate and appoint my said son, into whose hands I do in conformity to the law and custom in that behalf, hereby disseize and divest my self for the ends hereof and hereby instituting him my sole universal legatee, hereby revoking all other wills which I may have made prior or before the present to which alone I do adhere as maintaining my true intentions and last will.

Thus done, dictated and declared by the said Testatrix as and for her last will to and in the presence of us the said Notary and M.M. James Sheehan & James Coughlin, both Farmers, residing at the said Parish of Ste. Catherine, witnesses hereto requested, on the day, month and year first above written, under the number five thousand seven hundred and fifty five. And the said foregoing will having been read to the said Testatrix by the said Notary in the presence of the said witnesses she hath persisted therein. In faith and testimony whereof the said witnesses have set and subscribed their names and signatures in the presence of the said Notary also hereunto subscribing, the said Testatrix having declared to be illiterate, these presents having been first duly read.

On this fifth day of April one thousand nine hundred and and eleven, before me Cyrille Renaud, Public Notary, residing in the Parish of St. Ambroise of Jeune Lorette undersigned, personally appeared Peter Gurry, Farmer, residing in the Parish of Ste. Catherine, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested me the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law his last will and testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:

1º I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my Executor hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

2º I give and bequeath to my son Michael Gurry all my moveable and immoveable properties wherever the same may be found and whatever the same shall amount & I constitute my said son my universal legatee and Executor of this my last will and testament.

3º I revoke all will and testament that I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my last will and testament.

Done and passed at Ste. Catherine in the residence of the said Testator under Notarial Number four thousand nine hundred and eighty three. And after the reading of the said will by the Notary to the Testator in presence of Charles White and Patrick White, both of the Parish of Ste. Catherine, witnesses requested for these presents, the Testator having declared his inability to sign his name has made his mark in presence of the Notary and witnesses and the Notary and witnesses have signed in the presence of the Testator and in the presence of each other.
