Obituary*23 July 2008Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg, Winnipeg Metro Region, Manitoba, Canada; BERNIE HOLTON January 21, 1924 - July 20, 2008 Bernie passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre on Sunday. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Myrtle. Mom and Dad were married for 64 years. Dad was predeceased recently by his oldest son Pat (Carol) and will be sadly missed by his daughter Jan (Ken) and his son Larry (Linda). Also left to mourn his passing is his niece Lori (Don) and nephew Ross (Kathy). Mom and Dad were so proud to be grandparents to 10 and great-grandparents to 8. Dad served in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War. A short time after he completed his electrical apprenticeship and began a successful 35 year career at Swift Canadian where he made many lifelong friends. Dad loved all sports. He was a Bomber season ticket holder for 40 years and no one dared to call him on a Saturday night if the Habs were playing. He volunteered many years at Norberry Community Club in their hockey program. Over the years he also was active in hockey with the St. Boniface Saints, the University of Manitoba Bisons and the St. Boniface Mohawks. The cabin at Gull Lake was always a busy place on weekends with Mom and Dad offering wonderful hospitality to not only their friends but also to the many special friends of their children. Once Dad was fully retired his passion became golf which he really missed later on not being able to play. He loved his friends so much and we would in particular like to thank the “Breakfast Gang” which helped make him laugh and stay young at heart. Our family also says thank you to all the wonderful people who cared for Dad on Tower 7 at Deer Lodge. Our family will always be grateful. Let’s pray there is a better place... We love you...We will miss you. Should you wish to bid a final farewell, a graveside service will take place Friday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Vital Cemetery on River Road.4

John Corrigan b. 22 Dec 1831, d. 9 Jun 1906
Marriage*11 October 1892John Corrigan; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic Church, St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; John lost his first wife, Elizabeth, in 1889. At this time, they had 4 children under the age of seven. As John lived on the old farm, and was quite a skilled carpenter, he was in demand to build barns and houses and at times he would be absent from home the greater part of the week, and he sould have someone to take care of the children in his absence. Whatever the arrangement was, it did not suit Father McGratty who was parish priest at time. So Father McGratty hitched his horse to the buggy and drove down to John Holton's to see if he couldn't do a little matchmaking. On his arrival there, he addressed himself to Catherine, the oldest daughter, still unmarried, about becoming the wife of John Corrigan, and to be a good mother to his children. She agreed to this arrangement as Father McGratty insisted it appeared to be the will of God in her regard. On the following weekend, so the story goes, Father McGratty drove up to see John Corrigan and suggested he remarry. Mr. Corrigan thought it was a good idea but added that he didn't think he could find a suitable wife at his advancing age who was willing to care for his family. The good priest explained the steps he had taken and the marriage took place on the 11th of October, 1892.
"On the 11th day of October 1892, whereas the publication of three banns of marriage having been made at the prone of the parochial mass of St. Gabriel de Valcartier, between John Corrigan, widower of the late Elizabeth Loughran of this parish, on the one part; and Catherine Holton, daughter of age of John Holton, farmer of this parish and Catherine Sweeney, also of this parish on the other part. Having discovered no other impediment to this marriage, we the undersigned parish priest, have received their mutual consent to marriage and have given them the nuptial benediction in the presence of Patrick Cassin, the groom's friend and Michael Holton the bride's brother, who with friends and the bride have signed. The groom declared he could not sign. This act was duly read.

Census*April 1861John Holton; This family is not listed as such in the 1861 Census of Valcartier. I believe the enumerator made a mistake and that the family of John Holton and wife "Mary Bascler" is actually this family. It is well-known that the 1861 Census contained many mistakes. I have searched the Quebec baptismal records for the family listed under John Holton and Mary Bascler and there are none recorded even though the enumerator stated they were all born in Quebec. There is also no evidence of this family (Holton-Bascler) in later censuses.11

There is also no evidence of this family (Holton-Bascler) in later censuses.2
