On this day, the twelfth of December one thousand eight hundred and ninety, before us the undersigned Notaries Public for the Province of Quebec, residing at Quebec, personally came and appeared Mr. Robert Johnson, Farmer, of Stoneham, who being in tolerably good health but of sound mind, memory & understanding requested us the said Notaries to write down & receive his last will and testament which he dictated & made as follows, that is to say:

I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Johnson, Farmer, now residing with me all and every the property real and personal, moveable and immoveable generally whatsoever without any exception or reserve and of which I may die possessed of, on condition however & subject by him to allow his mother if she survives me to enjoy the same & have the usufruct thereof during her life time, subject also by my said son to pay unto his sister Barbara Helen Johnson a sum of fifty dollars without interest two years after she will have left the house and residence of her parents.

It was issued in Peckelsheim, County Warburg, Germany to Johann Keck., He and his Elizabeth Bickmann and six children then travelled to Bremen to board a ship The Great Briton Coloney destined for Jamaica. We know the ship landed in Jamaica but for some reason they were not accepted there and were forwarded to Canada. They arrived in Canada in the spring of 1836.
The birthdates of the children were given. There is no mention of son, Charles, who was born in 1820. He would have been 16 years old when the family left Germany. It's possible that he joined them in Canada later as he married Johanna O'Keefe there in 1854.3

It's possible that he joined them in Canada later as he married Johanna O'Keefe there in 1854.2

1º I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid and an anniversary mass and one hundred low masses.

2º I desire that the rest of the money which I have in the bank after the above mentioned expenses be divided by equal share between my son Daniel and my daughter Elizabeth Kack.

3º I give and bequeath to my son Daniel Kack, Farmer, residing in the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, the whole of my property, real and personal, moveable and immoveable of which I may die possessed hereby constituting my said son my universal legatee with the exception of the sum of two hundred dollars which I leave to my daughter Elizabeth Kack, which Daniel shall pay to her twenty dollars a year without interest for ten years which will commence to be paid her after my death on condition that Daniel will take care of me until my death. If Daniel my son will not agree to these arrangements, viz. to take good care of me until I die the present Will will be null and void and my last anterior Will will be good and valid.

4º I choose as Executor of my will the parish priest who will be in this parish of Valcartier after my death. These presents are the true conditions of this my will that my son Daniel and daughter-in-law takes good care of me until death, if I have complaints to make and am obliged to leave them because of neglects or ill treatment by them before death, then this last will which I make will be null and void. Notes by Patricia Balkcom: This will is dated the 19th of May, however, the burial record states she died on the 18th, so one of the records is off by a day. Esther was 68 years old and she did not have any children. Her husband, Patrick, had died seven months earlier. She left her estate to Daniel Kack, her nephew.3
