Obituary* | 18 January 2018 | Lynden, Whatcom County, Washington, United States; "Christopher Robert Keily, age 39, of Lynden, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. The suffering has ended for Chris. This kind and gentle soul, friend of the downtrodden, has left this unfair world. Even with his limited resources and poor health, he was always there with donations to Toys for Tots, buying groceries for poor families, and sending money to friends in need. Chris was born May 18th, 1978 to Patrick and Barbara (Strach) Keily in Ashland, Wisconsin. He spent the first 10 years of life in Butternut, moving to Hawthorne, Wisconsin in 1988. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1996. In 1999, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a condition that limited his physical abilities for the rest of his short life. In 2013, along with his parents, he moved to Lynden, Washington. He was an accomplished artist, violinist, and more importantly, a caring human being. Chris is survived by his parents Patrick and Barbara of Lynden, brother Michael (Tricia) Keily of Duluth, MN, along with numerous aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Bruno and Ann (Warshall) Strach, paternal grandparents Allan and Gertrude (Eder) Keily, and cousin Allison Abraham. Services will be Wednesday, January 24th at 11:00 AM at Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden. Inurnment will be in the Union Cemetery, Butternut, Wisconsin at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham for the excellent and compassionate care provided. We would also like to thank the staff of DaVita Kidney Center in Bellingham for their help in giving Chris the sense of family he always felt during dialysis. And thank you, Chris, for showing us what toughness is all about. Your pain has ended, ours is now beginning. You are invited to share your condolences and memories in the online guestbook at www.gilliesfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden."2 |

Note* | Note from Patrick Keily: Jack Keily was a wilderness guide at Boyd's Mason Lake Resort in Fifield, Wisconsin. He traveled from Quebec to join with Hugh Boyd, also of Valcartier, QC. He Married Freida Linsmeyer (adopted by Louis Linzmeier-Actual father was one Fred Biller, mother Louise Hoelzer) in 1908. Grandpa Jack was a rough, tough fighting wood butcher (sleigh maker) and plumber. Hard drinking and obstinate, he was actually liked by many people and feared by most. He lived in Butternut, Wisconsin until the early 1950s when he was put in a nursing home in Park Falls, Wisconsin. He ran away many times, always heading in the direction of Quebec (quoted once in 1961 as saying he was going to catch a ride on a rig back to Valcartier). When they took away his shoes to discourage running away, he ran away bare-footed. Stories told by my family say that he was a friend of Stephen Crane whom he guided on wilderness trips. He is buried in Fifield, Wisconsin, next to wife Freida, son George and Daughter Kathleen. In 2001, I travelled to Valcartier, QC to visit the site of the Keily farm. Upon returning, I brought a bag of soil from Grandpa's birthplace and placed it on his grave, thus bringing to him what he seemed to long for in his final years. 2 | |

Anecdote* | circa 1868 | Annie Montgomery Corrigan said that Simon was a sailor and may have jumped ship in Quebec City and for that reason was reluctant to disclose his whereabouts. Perry Smith, living in Ottawa, says that Simon lived with his grandfather for 5 or 6 years before he married Catherine Cassin. Michael Corrigan, (Annie's husband) said that Simon built a water powered sawmill on his property and sawed the lumber to build his farm buildings. It was not certain if he also cut lumber for others. It must have been a gate saw type because for whatever reason the two gate saws were stored in a shed at home until the building was demolished in 1956. The house burned down in the 1960's. Sometime in the 1920's, Thomas Conway (b.1918) and who lives in Ottawa was given the choice of two violins that were stored in the attic. Simon was a special horse man and when he needed a horse, he would whistle and the horses would come running. - Information given by Eric Corrigan.1 |
