On this day, the thirteenth of December one thousand eight hundred and eighty one, before us the undersigned Notaries Public for the Province of Quebec residing at the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared Mr. John Knox, farmer, residing at the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, who being in good bodily health and of sound and perfect mind, memory and understanding requested us the said Notaries to write down and receive in due form of law his last will and testament which he instantly dictated and named unto us the said Notaries as follows, to wit:

I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Janet Mather all the property real and personal, moveable and immoveable, without any exception nor reserve whatsoever, which I may die possessed of at the time of my decease, to have and to hold the same unto her in full & absolute property hereby appointing her my sole universal legatee.

I do hereby appoint my said wife Executrix of this my present last will, hereby revoking & making null and void all former wills and codicils heretofore by me made, declaring the present to be my only true last will and testament.

It was thus made and dictated by the said John Knox unto us the said Notaries on the day and year first above written and the present last will & testament having been read over in full to the said Testator by Mtre. Philippe Huot, one of us the said Notaries, in the presence of Mtre. Edward George Cannon the other Notary who assisted and was present during the whole execution hereof, he the said John Knox, testator, declared that he had perfectly heard and understood the same and found it to contain his true last will and testament and therefore persisted therein.

Thus done and executed at Quebec in the office of Mtre. Philippe Huot, one of the said Notaries, on the day and year first above written, under the number eight thousand five hundred and sixty seven, the said John Knox, testator, having signed with and in the presence of the said Notaries, who have also both signed with & in the presence of each other and of the said Testatrix these presents having been first only read according to law.

On this sixteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety six, before me Cyrille Renaud, Public Notary, residing in the Parish of St. Ambroise undersigned, personally appeared Walter Knox residing in the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, Farmer, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested us the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law his last will and testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:

Firstly and principally, I most willingly resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator in the humble hope that he will receive it to his favor through the sole merits and intercession of Jesus Christ my Saviour.

Secondly, I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my executor herein after named as soon as possible after my death.

Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my children as their share in the succession of their mother and as also their share in my succession the amount after described:
To Elizabeth Knox the sum of five hundred dollars and one cow.
To Grace Knox the sum of five hundred dollars and one cow.
To Thomas Knox the sum of one hundred dollars.
To Walter Knox the sum of one hundred dollars.
To Mary Knox the sum of one hundred dollars.

Fourthly, I give and bequeath all my moveable and immoveable properties to my son William Knox to the charge to pay all my debts, but the right of my children above named will be paid only after the full payment of the lands bought of Mrs. Sarah Pozer the 15 June 1886. The said William Knox will be obliged to entertain the said two cows to his sisters.

Fifthly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my said son William Knox as executor of my said will.

Sixthly, I revoke all wills and codicils I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.

The present will was thus declared by the said testator to the said Notary in presence of Alexandre Boucher, Doctor of St. Ambroise, and Charles Wolff, Farmer of Valcartier, and by the said Notary in the presence of said witnesses read to the testator, who declared to understand it fully and persist therein.

Done and passed at Valcartier at the residence of the said Testator under Notarial Number one thousand [one hundred and twenty seven] and signed by the testator with and in presence of said witnesses and Notary also hereunto subscribing in his presence and in the presence of each other after due reading hereof.

Notes by Patricia Balkcom: Walter died eight years later on the 4th of July 1904 at the age of about 72 years. His wife, Mary, had died in 1866. They had seven children. One of them, John predeceased Walter in 1871, the other children are all mentioned in the will.5

On this first of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and On the eight day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty, before us the undersigned Notaries Public duly admitted and sworn in and for the Province of Lower Canada, residing in the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared in the office of William de Léry, one of us the undersigned Notaries, William Knox of Valcartier, Farmer, apparently in good health of body and of sound and perfect mind, memory and understanding who did make, publish, dictate and name this her last will and testament in the words following, that is to say:

Firstly and principally, the Testator doth recommend his soul into the hands of Almighty God, her Creator, hoping for a free pardon and remission of all his sins thro the intercession of his Blessed Son our Saviour, his body he commits to the earth to be interred in a manner suitable to his situation in life at the time of his decease.

Secondly, the Testator doth will and direct that at the time of his decease all his just debts, funeral expenses and wrongs, if any there be, be fully paid and satisfied by his Executrix hereinafter named.

Thirdly, the Testator doth give, devise, and bequeath unto Mary Arthurson, his dear and beloved wife, the usufruct and enjoyment during her life time of all and every the property, moveable and immoveable, goods, monies, chattels, effects and things which he the said Testator shall be entitled to, to have and to hold the same during her natural life from the time of the decease of the said Testator without however being bound to, at any time after the said demise of the Testator, make or cause to be made all or any inventory whatsoever of the said property to be by her enjoyed during her said natural life.

And as to the full and entire property, l'entière propriété, of the said property moveable and immoveable, goods, plate, monies, chattels, effects and things of the said Testator doth give and bequeath the same, subject to the aforesaid enjoyment, to his legal heirs hereby instituting the said legal heirs his universal & residuary legatees. The said legal heirs to have and to hold the said property moveable and immoveable, goods, monies, chattels, effects and things, subject as aforesaid from the said demise of the said Testator forever.

The said William Knox to have and to hold the said property moveable and immoveable, goods, monies, plates, chattels, effects and things as aforesaid from the time of the decease of said Testatrix in full property forever.

And lastly, the said Testator doth nominate and appoint the said Mary Arthurson, his said wife, Executrix of this his true last will and testament in the hands of whom he doth hereby divest himself of all his said property hereby revoking all other and former wills, testaments & codicils he may or might have made.

Thus done, dictated and named word for word by the said Testator unto the said William de Léry, Notary, aforesaid his colleague Mtre. Alex. Lemoine present, read the present last will and testament having been read over and over again to the said Testator, he did declare the same to contain his true last will and mind and did sign his name together with the said Notaries in faith & testimony thereof.

One mariginal note signed is good and three words struck out are null.
