On this ninth day of September one thousand eight hundred and ninety eight, before me Cyrille Renaud, Public Notary, residing in the Parish of St. Ambroise and John Cosgrove, Farmer, & Thomas Brown, Farmer, both of Valcartier witnesses requested for the effects of these presents, personally came and appeared Dame Isabella Leithead, wife of William Hamilton, residing in Valcartier, Farmer, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested us the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law her last will and testament which she has declared in manner and form following:

1º I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my executor hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

2º I give and bequeath to my son John L. Hamilton all my moveable and immoveable property wherever the same may be found and to whatever the same shall amount constituting the said John L. Hamilton my universal legatee.

1- To the charge to pay my daughter Susanna Hamilton four years after my death the sum of fifty dollars.

2- To pay to Jane Hamilton, and in case of her death at this time, to her daughter Isabella Aikens a sum of fifty dollars one year after the above payment.

I nominate, constitute and appoint my said son John L. Hamilton as Executor of this my will.

I revoke all wills and codicils I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.

The present will was thus declared by the said Testatrix to the said Notary in presence of said witnesses, read to the said Testatrix by the Notary in presence of witnesses, who declared to understand it fully and persist therein.

Done and passed at the residence of said Testatrix at Valcartier under Notarial Number fourteen hundred & sixty five. And the Testatrix having declared her inability to sign her name has made her mark in presence of Notary and witnesses and the Notary and witnesses have signed in presence of Testatrix and in presence of each other.

Notes by Patricia Balkcom: I have not been able to find a burial record for Isabella or her husband, William Hamilton. However, there is a gravestone in St. Andrew Presbyterian Cemetery in Valcartier with the name of Isabella Hamilton (no date) on it. The stone is shared with Adam Leithead.4
