She had arrived on the ship Brougham and was first placed in the Catholic orphanage in Quebec City. It is not clear how long she stayed with the family. It does state that she eventually went to the U.S. She had two siblings who died, Robert, aged 3 (Aug. 31); and Mary, aged 9 (Aug. 20).  Adoption location of another sibling, Bridget, aged 10, is not listed.4

On this day, the thirty first of July one thousand eight hundred and eighty eight, before the undersigned Notary Public for the Province of Quebec and the witnesses he hereinafter named, all residing at the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared Mr. Francis Martin, residing at St. Gabriel of Valcartier, who done hereby make and publish his last will and testament as follows, that is to say:

I give and bequeath unto Sarah O'Neill, my wife, all the monies in cash which I may die possessed of, whether the same are found at home or are deposited in Banks or elsewhere, to be by her enjoyed and possessed in full & absolute property from the day of my death.

I give and bequeath also unto my said wife the usufruct and enjoyment as long as she lives of all other property real or personal, moveable or immoveable which I may die possessed of, releasing my said wife from the obligation of making an Inventory after death.

I give and bequeath unto each of my two single daughters living with me & named Margaret and Catherine the sum of fifty dollars to be paid to each of them without interest after the death of my wife if she has not paid them the same herself during her life time.

I give and bequeath unto my eldest daughter Jane Martin, wife of Thomas Manning, farmer of Lorette, the sum of fifty dollars to be paid to her without interest after the death of my said wife, if she has not paid the same herself during her life time, but I expressly order that the said sum of fifty dollars be paid to herself and to nobody else & without the interference, authorization or control of her said husband who shall never be able to claim any part of the said sum in capital or interest by right of Community of Property or otherwise.

And as to the rest and residue of all my property real and personal, moveable and immoveable which I will die possessed of, I give, devise an bequeath the same unto my son Joseph Martin, now living with me, to have and to hold the same unto him in full and absolute property from the day of the death of my said wife who shall enjoy the usufruct thereof during her life time as above expressed.

I hereby nominate and appoint my said wife, Sarah O'Neill, Executrix of this my present last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills and codicils at any time heretofore by me made and declaring the present to be my only true last will and testament hereby expressly ordering that he term of her executorship shall not be limited to the year and day but shall last until the full and complete execution of this my present last will.

This last will received by Mtre. Philippe Huot, Notary Public, in the presence of M.M. François Xavier Grenier and Joseph Octave Goulet, both of the City of Quebec, clerks, witnesses expressly called for the execution hereof and who were present all the time, having been read over to the said Testator by the said Philippe Huot in the presence of said witnesses, he declared to well understand the same and persisted in the same as containing his true last will and intentions.

Done and executed at the City of Quebec in the office of the said Philippe Huot on the day and year first above written, under the number nine thousand four hundred and five of his record. In testimony whereof the said Testator hath signed with us in the presence of the said Notary and of the said witnesses who have also signed in the presence of the said Testator and in the presence f each other after the reading hereof according to law and the observance of all the formalities required for the validity of wills.

On this day, the twenty-seventh of November one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, before the undersigned Notary Public for the Province of Quebec, residing in the City of Quebec, and James White and James Martin of the place called Valcartier, in the County of Quebec, farmers, witnesses to these presents personally came and appeared: John Martin, of the said place of Valcartier, said County of Quebec, farmer, who being of ill-health but of sound & disposing mind, made as follows his last will and testament.

I give, devise and bequeath to Mary Corrigan, my wife, all the property real and personal, moveable and immoveable that I may die possessed of, instituting her my universal legatee in full ownership, at the charge of lodging, clothing and feeding the children issue of our marriage until their majority.

The present last will and testament received by Jean-Baptiste Delage, the undersigned Notary, having been read to the said testator, in presence of the said witnesses, he declared well to understand the same and has persisted in the same, as containing his last intentions.

Thus done & executed at Valcartier aforesaid, dwelling of the said testator, on the day and year first above written, under the number two thousand six hundred and twenty four of the records of the said notary.

In witness whereof the said notary & witnesses have signed in the presence of one another & in the presence of the said testator who declared not to know how to write nor sign his name, after the reading done according to law.
