On this twenty third day of April, one thousand nine hundred and twenty one.
Before me Cyrille Renauld, Notary, residing in Loretteville, undersigned, personally appeared James Bowles, husband of Mary Gurry, farmer and butcher, residing at Ste. Catherine, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested me the said notary to write down and receive in one form of law her last will and testament which he has declared in a manner and form following that is to say
I desire that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my
Executor thereinafter named as soon after my death and one hundred (?)
Masses for my soul after my death.
I desire that a monument for me and my husband be erected in the cemetery of the parish of St. Gabriel de Valcartier.
I give and bequeath unto my husband James Bowles the use, usufructs and enjoyment during his life of all my properties.
I give and bequeath unto my son, Hugh Charles Bowles the emplacements and buildings situated in the parish of Ste Catherine with the stock, horse, cow, etc., house furniture, except a part of this last for my daughter Margaret Mary Bowles.
Margaret Mary Bowles will be entitled by this will and the will of my husband, in the sum of two thousand and five hundred dollars, Michael Joseph Bowles in the sum of two thousand dollars, Harold in the sum of one thousand dollars and William Bowles in the sum of five hundred dollars and Mary Ethel in the sum of four thousand and five hundred dollars.
After the payments legatees herein before mentioned the balance of my properties will be divided by equal share between Margaret, Michael, Harold and William Bowles.
I nominate, constitute and appoint my husband James Bowles and my son James Bowles of Montreal as my executors and in the case of my husband predeceasing me my son James will be the sole executor and his charge shall continue during five years if needed for the execution of my will and the sale of the properties in Ottawa; the said executor having the power and authority for the sale of properties.
I revoke all will and codicil I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.
Done and passed at Ste Catherine in the house of said testator under notorial number eight thousand five hundred and eighty one. After the reading of the present will to the testator by the notary in presence of Napoleon Beaumont and Donat Beaumont, farmers, both of Ste Catherine, the testator, the notary and witnesses have signed in the presence of each others.

Note by Patricia Balkcom: James died about 3 months after writing this will. He died on the 9th of August 1921 at 69 years of age. His seven youngest children are mentioned in the will. He and Mary Gurry had 14 children – four of whom died in one week in 1888. They were aged 2 through 5 years and died of diphtheria. Wife, Mary, died 2 months previous to James’ death.6

On this day the sixth of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty five. I the undersigned Notary Public duly commissioned and sworn for Lower Canada riding in the District of Quebec at the request of John Bowles residing in the Parish of Val-Cartier in the County of Quebec, farmer, went to the residence of the said John Bowles situate at Val-Cartier aforesaid. Where being in the presence of James Lannin, farmer, and John McLaughlin, farmer, both residing in the Parish of Val-Cartier aforesaid. I found the said John Bowles sitting in his kitchen same being sound of mind, memory, judgment and understanding as appeared to me the said Notary and to the said above named and undersigned witnesses by his actions, words and discourse.

*Marginal Note ( Witnesses’ here unto required for the purpose here of the said witnesses’ signing with me the said Notary) initials James Lannin, John McLaughlin, Benjamin Lelievre.

And the said John Bowles, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the hour thereof, doth hereby make, publish, declare and dictate unto Benjamin Lelievre, the said undersigned Notary in the presence of the said above named and undersigned _______ witnesses, his last will and testament in manner following. That is to say the said John Bowles recommends his soul to God, his Creator, hoping for a free pardon and remission of his sins when it shall please Him to dissolve his mortal body through the intercession of his blessed Son our Savior.

The said John Bowles doth hereby give and bequeath unto Rose Ann Bowles, his daughter and James Maher, his son-in-law. All his moveable and immoveable property what same of which he is now possessed of or may hereafter be possessed of without any reserve, whatsoever sum or sums notes at hand or obligations, or otherwise, and wherever the said immovable property may be found whether in Canada or elsewhere

The said Rose Ann Bowles and James Maher to have, hold, possess and enjoy the said moveable and immoveable property in full property and forever. and in common from _______ after the day of the decease of the said John Bowles.

*Marginal Note (This present and last will and testament is made by the charge of the said Rose Ann Bowles and James Maher of paying unto Thomas Bowles his son aged fourteen, the sum of five hundred dollars which said sum the said John Bowles directs to be paid by the said Rose Ann Bowles and James Maher as soon as the said Thomas Bowles shall have attained the full age of twenty one, free from interest.) initials James Lannin, John McLaughlin, Benjamin Lelievre.

The said John Bowles directs that his just and lawful debts be paid by his executor hereby after named.

The said John Bowles directs that his body be buried in a decent manner and that five said masses of Requiem be said after his decease that the same be said monthly.

The said John Bowles doth hereby constitute and appoint the person of John? Bowles, his son of Val-Cartier aforesaid, farmer, as executor to his last will and testament. Whom he doth hereby request to render him this last act of kindness.

The said John Bowles hereby annulling, cancelling, objurgating, and making void all former will or wills which may have been heretofore made and executed by him the said John Bowles.

Thus done, made and dictated word by word by the said John Bowles unto the said Benjamin Lelievre, and said undersigned Notary in the presence of the said above named and undersigned witnesses on the day and year first above written under the number one thousand three hundred and twenty four, and after having read and re-read the present last will and testament unto the said John Bowles in the presence of the said above named and undersigned witnesses which he declared well to understand as being his last will and meaning, he hath persisted therein, and hath declared that he could not write or sign but make his ordinary mark by a cross, having the two above named and undersigned witnesses sign with me the said Notary in faith and testimony of the premises.

Note by Patricia Balkcom: John died 10 months later on the 20th of February 1866 at the reported age of 78 years. He had been married three times – his first two wives predeceased him. His third wife, (Hannah Ready) although living at his death, is not mentioned in the will. The two children – Rosanna and Thomas were children of this marriage. John had at least eight other children by his first wives.

BE IT REMEMBERED, that on the first day of July in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty two at the said City of Quebec, in the said District, John McLaughlin and John Bowles, of Valcartier, farmers, is convicted before the undersigned, one of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said District, for that they the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles, did on the twentieth day of June last past, at the place called Valcartier, in this District, violently assault, strike and beat one Michael Farrell of the Parish of Ste Catherine de Fossambault, farmer; without provocation or cause and against the form of the Statue in such case made and provided.
AND I adjudge the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles for their said offence to forfeit and pay the sum of fifteen shillings to be paid and applied according to law, and also to pay to the said Michael Farrell, the sum of four pounds ten shillings and eight pence for his costs in this behalf; and if the said several sums be not paid forthwith I adjudge the said John McLaughlin and John Bowles to be imprisoned in the House of Correction at the said City of Quebec, in the said District, for the space of twelve days unless the said several sums and all costs and charges of Commitment and of convoying the said John McLaughlin and john Bowles to the said house of Conviction shall be sooner paid.

On the twenty sixth of November one thousand eight hundred and ninety, before the undersigned Notaries Public for the Province of Quebec, Canada, residing in the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared Mr. John Bowles of the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, Farmer, who has made as follows his last will and testament:

I give, devise and bequeath to my son Charles the following properties:
1º - the half lot of land First Concession of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, purchased from the Sheriff of Quebec, measuring two and a half arpents in width upon fifteen arpents in depth, bounded south and west by Hugh McLaughlin, east by James Bowles and North by the main road.

2º -another half lot of land divided by the main road, bought from Samuel Clark, being partly in the First and partly in the Second Concessions, measuring two and a half acres in width by a depth of fifteen acres or thereabouts, and

3º - nine acres of land adjoining this last described lot between the lands of James Lannin to the east and of John McLaughlin to the north, subject to a payment of a sum of two hundred dollars in part extinguishment of the mortgages held on my lands.

4º, I give and bequeath to my son William the following lots of land:
1stly a lot of land measuring five arpents by fifteen, First Concession of said St. Gabriel of Valcartier, which I acquired partly from my father and partly from Maher, and

5º another lot of land situate in same concession at the rear of the lot lastly mentioned and described, measuring five arpents by nine, which was purchased from Mr. Neilson with the buildings subject to the payment of a sum of one hundred and fifty dollars in part extinguishment of the mortgage held on my lands.

6º I give and bequeath to my said two sons Charles and William the lot of land called the Mountain lot bought from Maher on the First Concession of said St. Gabriel de Valcartier.

In bequeathing the above lots to my said sons, I mean to give them the rights of property I may have on them, that is to say, one undivided half, my wife with whom I am community of property being owner of the other half.

8º I give and bequeath to each of my daughters Kate and Rosa Ann a sum of fifty dollars each which will be paid to them by my said son William, i.e., to Kate two years and Rosa Ann four years after my decease without interest.

9º I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Winnifred McLaughlin the usufruct and enjoyment during her natural life to the properties bequeathed to my said son William and I hereby giver her, my said wife, the residue of my property, real and personal, moveable and immoveable, which I may possessed of, instituting her my residuary legatee in full ownership and the sole executrix of my will.

This last will and testament received by Cy. Tessier Notary in the presence of G.F. C., de Léry his colleague, having been read to the Testator by the first named Notary in the presence of his said colleague, he has declared well to understand the same and has persisted in the same as containing his last intentions.

At Quebec, Office of the said Cy. Tessier under the number eight thousand and fifty four of his records. In testimony whereof the Notaries have signed in the presence of one another and of the Testator who has declared not to know how to write his name, after the reading done according to law.
