On the fourteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight, before the undersigned Notaries Public residing in the City of Quebec personally came and appeared and was present John Navin of the Seigniory of Valcartier Esquire, Farmer, which said John Navin being apparently in good bodily health and of sound and perfect mind, memory and understanding requested us the said Notaries to receive and write down his last will and testament which he instantly made, dictated and named unto us word for word in manner and form following, that is to say:

I recommend my soul to Almighty God hoping for a free pardon and remission of all my sins through the intercession of my Blessed Saviour Jesus Christ.

I will and direct that all my just debts be fully paid and satisfied by my Executor hereinafter named.

I give and bequeath unto the children to be born of the marriage of James Corrigan and Ann Navin, his wife, of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, Farmer, a certain lot of land situate lying and being in the Third Concession of the same Parish of St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette containing three acres in front by thirty acres in depth bounded in front towards the east by the main road, on one side towards the south by the widow Reynolds, on the other side towards the north by Mrs. Hart, in the rear towards the west by woodlands together with a one-story wood built dwelling house, barn and stable thereon erected. Also a strip of land situate and being at the same place containing three acres in length by two acres in breath, bounded on one side towards the east by the main road, on one side towards the south by the widow Reynolds, on the other side towards the north by the said James Corrigan and in rear towards the west by Mrs. Hart.

And I also give and bequeath to the children to be born of the marriage of the said James Corrigan and the said Ann Navin the sum of one hundred pounds current money to be to them once paid and satisfied.

And I do hereby appoint the said James Corrigan sole executor of this my present last will and testament revoking all former wills and codicils at any time heretofore by me made.

It was thus made, dictated and named by the said John Navin unto us the said Notaries on the day and year above written and the present last will and testament having been read over and over again lu et relu au long to the said John Navin by Mtre. E.G. Cannon one of us the said Notaries in the presence of Mtre. Philippe Huot, his confrere, who was present all the time during the execution hereof, the said John Navin declared to have perfectly heard and understood the said will and testament and persisted in the contents thereof.

Done and passed at the said City of Quebec in the office of the said E.G. Cannon one of the undersigned Notaries on the day and year first above written under the number three thousand and four hundred and thirty four. The said Testator having signed these presents twice duly read as aforesaid together with us the said Notaries in faith and testimony of the promises.

On this day the sixteenth of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty four, I the undersigned Notary Public duly commissioned and sworn for Lower Canada residing in the District of Quebec at the request of John Navin, Esquire, residing in the Seigniory of Saint Gabriel, at the place called ValCartier, went to the residence of the said John Navin situate at ValCartier aforesaid.

Where being in the presence of Francis Martin, of ValCartier aforesaid, farmer, and of John Wilson of the township of Stoneham, farmer, witnesses thereunto required for the purposes hereof, the said witnesses signing with me the said Notary. I found the said John Navin, sick in bed, never the less sound of mind, memory, judgment and understanding as appeared to me the said Notary and the said above named and undersigned witnesses by his actions, discourse and words.

And the said John Navin considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the hour thereof, doth hereby make, publish, declare and dictate to Benjamin Lelievre, the said undersigned Notary in the presence of the said above named witnesses, his last will and Testament in manner and form following. That is to say, the said John Navin recommends his soul to God, his Creator, when it shall please Him to dissolve his mortal body hoping for a free pardon and remission of all his sins through the intercession of his blessed Son and Savior.

The said John Navin doth hereby give and bequeath unto Sarah Duffy, his beloved wife, all his moveable and immoveable property generally without any reserve whatsoever, sum and sums of money, whether due by bond, note of hand, obligation or otherwise.

The said Sarah Duffy, to have, hold, use, possess and enjoy the said moveable and immoveable property in full property, from and after the day of the decease of the said John Navin.

Nevertheless, it is the desire, wish and request of the said John Navin, that should there be any moveable or immoveable property left and remaining from the present bequest, at the decease of the said Sarah Duffy, that the same be the property and belong to Ann Navin, wife of James Corrigan and to the children born of her marriage with the said James Corrigan.

The said John Navin, doth hereby, give and bequest unto the Roman Catholic Archepiscopal Corporation of Quebec, the sum of two hundred dollars in trust and for the use and benefit of the Roman Catholic Church of ValCartier, and it is the desire and wish of the said John Navin that the same sum of two hundred dollars be expending towards the building of a Belfry for the said above mentioned Roman Catholic Church of ValCartier.

And the said John Navin directs that the said sum of two hundred dollars, be paid by the said Sarah Duffy, his said wife, to the Roman Catholic Archepiscopal Corporation of Quebec in the course of six months from the day of his decease.

The said John Navin directs all his just and lawful debts be paid.

The said John Navin directs that his body be buried in the Roman Catholic Church of ValCartier and that a solemn grand Mass of Requiem be sung the day of his burial. The said John Navin further directs that five low masses be said every year for ten years from the day of his decease and that one solemn Mass of Requiem be said every year, also for ten years.

The said John Navin doth hereby nominate and appoint the person of Patrick Cassin of ValCartier, farmer, as executor to this his last will and testament whom he doth hereby request to render him this last act of kindness.

The said John Navin doth hereby annul, cancel, objurgate, and make void all former will or wills which may have been heretofore made and executed by him the said John Navin.

Thus done, made and dictated word by word by the said John Navin to the said Benjamin Lelievre, the said undersigned Notary, in the presence of the said above named and undersigned witnesses, on the day and year, first above written, under the number one thousand two hundred and ninety four, and after having read and re-read the present last will and Testament to the said John Navin, in the presence of the said above named witnesses, which he declared well to understand he hath persisted therein, as being his last will and meaning, and the said John Navin declared that he could not write nor sign his name, owing to his extreme weakness, but made his mark of a cross, having the said Francis Martin, one of the above named signed with me the said Notary and having the said John Wilson declared that he could not write nor sign his name but made his ordinary mark by a cross, in faith and testimony of the premises.

Burial*18 June 1864St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic Church, St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; John was one of the 1st and oldest trustee's of said church, funeral performed by Father P. Kelly, witnesses were Prospère Théberge, Edward Vandal and Michael Leonard, and many others who could not sign. It appears that due to his status with the church, that his body was interred in the church, not in the cemetery.4

On this eleventh day of November one thousand nine hundred and twenty four, before me Cyrille Renaud, Notary, residing at Loretteville, undersigned, personally appeared Dora Emma Neil, wife of William Bedard of Valcartier, Farmer, and who being of sound & disposing mind, memory and understanding, hath requested me the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law her last will & testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say: -

1- I most willingly resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God, my Creator, in the humble hope that he will receive it to his favor through the sole merits and intercession of Jesus Christ, my Saviour.

2- I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my Executor hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

3- I leave and bequeath to my husband, William Bedard, all my moveable & immoveable properties wherever the same may be found & to whatever the same shall amount hereby constituting my said husband my universal legatee, with the sole charge and obligation to pay to each of my sons, Russell William & Gordon Francis Bedard to each of them the sum of five hundred dollars at the age of majority to each of them but the said sum shall not be hypothecate nor mortgage on the immoveable properties, and my said husband will have the right to mortgage or sell the said if he likes.

4- I nominate, constitute and appoint my said husband William Bedard my universal legatee & the Executor of this my will.

5- I revoke all wills I may have heretofore made & I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.

Done & passed at Valcartier in the residence of said Testatrix under notarial number nine thousand six hundred and eleven.

After the reading of the present will to the Testatrix by the Notary in presence of William Neil & Thomas Lavallee, both farmers of Valcartier, the Testatrix, the Notary and witnesses have signed in the presence of each other.
