They were married on the first of September 1898 at Tamora in Seward County. Witnesses were Addie Neilson Thomas of Seward and Florence L. Brethomoer of Seward by B. J. Brethomoer, Minister of the Gospel.8
Anecdote*9 August 1918Amos Thomas; Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, United States; This letter was written by Addie Neilson Thomas to her son, Amos. She mentions that the Cassin ancestor (who would have been Margaret Kelly) may have run off with her coachman (Patrick Cassin) in Ireland. I have heard this same story but it referred to Isabella Bonnalie and Lawrence Corrigan. It seems unlikely that it was Margaret Kelly as she and Patrick married in Ireland and stayed in the same area for several years where they had several children.
This is the body of the letter:
To Amos Thomas from his mother, Addie Neilson Thomas Lincoln, Nebraska August 9, 1918 A brief sketch of your maternal family The Honorable John Neilson MP (Member of Parliament), your great grandfather, the founder of the Neilson family in this country, was born and educated in Scotland. The county in which the Neilson family lived was named Kirdcudbright, in the extreme south of Scotland. In your uncle Walter Nielson’s travels in Europe a few years ago he visited this place and succeeded in finding the spot in which our earliest ancestors, to our knowledge, had their home – a knoll and a pile of stones are all that remain of our ancestral home. He visited a farmer on the place and found that he had the Neilson coat of arms- the original stone slab that had been o the old house-above his door. Your uncle secured a photograph of it. He has had it copied in leather and it adorns his dining room above the fireplace where I hope you may see it someday in his Milwaukee home. To return to your great, great grandfather, in his early manhood he came to Quebec, Canada and established the first newspaper ever printed in Quebec, printed half English and half French. (He inherited the newspaper after the deaths of his uncle William Brown and his brother Samuel died.) He also owned a bookstore in that city and was a Member of Parliament for the Province of Quebec for years. He received large grants of land for the government and was requested by King George (I, II, or III) to be knighted for services done for his government, but as the story goes he would not kneel before the King to be knighted and so remained the Honorable John Neilson instead of Sir John as he would have been if he had complied with the king’s request. He married Miss Marie Hubaire, and accomplished French girl of one of the leading and oldest families of Quebec. To them were born five children, William, John, Samuel, Isabel, and Margaret. The daughters never married and lived in the ancestral home at Neilsonville, a suburb of Quebec, until their deaths. William, your great grandfather, and the oldest son, was sent to Edinburgh, Scotland to be educated. He was educated for the Law, but never followed the profession. On his return from England, his father gave him a large tract of land in Valcartier Township, 18 miles from Quebec, which he rented out receiving a large income from rentals and leading the life of a country gentleman. He married a young Irish girl in the neighborhood, Margaret Cassin, a beautiful woman in character as well as physique; it has been said a bit for romance in her family is that her mother ran away from Ireland with her father’s coachman. They came to Quebec and located on a farm in Valcartier and lived happily and raised a large family of brawny men and women of which your great grandmother was the daughter of the family. Nine children were born to this union of whom your grandfather, my father, was the oldest son. Your grandmother dying when he was sixteen, and she at the age of 38 years. Your great grandfather married the second time after a number of years. His second wife being a Miss Eliza Mc Adams. No Children were born to this union. Cornelius Brown Neilson, your grandfather, was married at the age of 21 years to Margaret Ireland who was 17 years of age. She was the daughter of Hopper Ireland and Mary Watt Ireland of Valcartier. Your great grandfather Hopper Ireland was born in England and was a school teacher in his early years and later a farmer in which line of work he made a comfortable competency for his old age. Our great Grandma Ireland was born in Scotland and was a wonderful woman, a hard worker and a woman of fine character, a pioneer of Lower Canada. She was a great butter maker, she and grandfather keeping a large herd of cows and making butter all in pound and half pound prints which she sold to customers in the city of Quebec. Driving thought the deep snows of the long Canadian winter the long 18 miles to town. Wild animals were abundant in these days but with a good horse and a sleigh she made the trip once a week leaving the house at 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning and returning at night. They raised a family of eight children who were a credit to their good Scotch and English ancestry. Four years after your Grandfather Neilson’s marriage he with his wife and two children emigrated to Granville township of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin and located on a farm about seven miles from Milwaukee where he lived continuously for over fifty five years. He died in May 1918 aged 82 years. Your grandmother preceded him one year at the age of 79 years. Nine children were born to this union, Dr. Walter H. Neilson being the oldest of the family and the head of the Neilson family now the third direct line and his George Neilson, MD will be the next in line. I, your mother being the oldest daughter living.9

Military*Was a lieutenant in the Canadian militia.5
Immigration*1860From the newspaper The Milwaukee Sentinal, Feb. 15, 1954: "The original Neilson, Cornelius, to settle in the Town of Granville was of Scottish ancestry. His grandfather, John Neilson, established the Quebec Gazette after stopping at Philadelphia on his way to Canada long enough to learn the printing business from the old master Benjamin Franklin. He learned it well, too, for the Quebec Gazette issue commemorating Queen Victoria's coronation was printed in gold and is now a collector's item.
JUST BEFORE the outbreak of the Civil War, John Neilson's grandson, Cornelius, and his wife, bundled up their 3-year-old son and came to the northwest corner of Milwaukee County to raise wheat. In passing, it might be noted that in 1880 the Badger State led the nation in the dollar value of flour and grist mill products.
The little family lived in a log cabin until Neilson found time to build a solid stone house that still stands at the west end of the golf course. For years the log cabin served as summer kitchen and store house.
Cornelius Neilson raised nine children in the big stone house, one of whom was to make a name for himself in medicine. The only one of those children living is Mrs. John McGovern, 6251 Upper Parkway, N." (The Country Club referred to is the Tripoli Country Club, Mrs. McGovern was Grace Neilson McGovern, daughter of Cornelius.)6
Emigration*18 November 1860Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States; First Letter from Cornelius Neilson from Wisconsin to his father, William Neilson in Canada.
Mequon
November 18, 1860
My dear Papa,
I should have written long before this, but I have been so busy that I have not had time to write. We arrived in Milwaukee on Saturday last at one o'clock pm. All well, but very tired, not having had any sleep since we left Quebec. We went to the Hotel and had dinner. After dinner, I went to see the person about the farm, but he was not at home. I then left for Mequon to see Coregan, being anxious to know whether it was sold or not. When I saw Coregan, he said it was not yet sold and that Carson had give the man another fortnight to make the most he could of it. We then went to see the man about it and after a great deal of
bargaining he agreed to sell it for 2400$. I said I would not give so much for it. We then went to town and seen Carson and I told him that he had agreed to sell it to me for 2100. He said that he had extended the time to the other parties but that if I could come to terms with them he would be satisfied, so after spending three days I bought it for 2300$. There was two other persons about buying it, and would have given 2500$ for it but they could not pay all cash. However, I am weel pleased that I have bought it althought I had to pay 200 more for it. I could not have found a farm for that price within 28 miles round Milwaukee. Farms have gone up 15 per cent since I was up here before, and I got a perfect title of the farm and I got an abstract and quit claim warrantee deed. I employed a lawyer to see that all was right. It is a better farm than I thought it was. It is the best grain farm in that district. We intend to move into our own house on Monday. I hope to begin to plough on Tuesday. I have about 55 acres to plough. I have bought furniture and plough, waggon (sic) and harness. We have had very fine weather since we came up here. Maggie is quite pleased with the country. Agnes Cassin has not found a place yet. She is living with Mick (?) Cassin's wife these days. She expects to have a place next week. The children are quite well. Walter often speaks of Grandpa. I have had very good health since I came up. I think that I am in a very fair way of doing well now with the blessing of Providence. I hope I may see you all up here yet. It cost me considerable to come up. We paid $16 each. I had not to pay anything for the children. We came first class nearly all the way. Maggie felt very tired nursing the child all the way. There is a fine farm to be sold 3 miles from Milwaukee on the lake shore but I do not think it could be bought for less than $70 an acre. You can tell them all that now is the time to buy land up here.
I suppose that you have good sleighing by this time down there. I have one very fine horse. I paid $90 for him. He is 6 years old. I have a mare in view I think I will buy on Monday. I have not time to write any longer this time. Maggie sends her love to you. Margaret. Sam. Lizzie. Mary. Isabel. Elizabeth, Charles, Agnes and John and all the rest. Write soon dear Papa. Give them all my love. Tell Margaret to write to Maggie. I hope I will see you up here. Bring Margaret when you come. I remain your affectionate son,
Cornelius Neilson
P.S. Tell Charles I will write to him when I have more time. If you see any of the Irelands you tell them I will write next week. Sarah will write on Monday. I forgot to give you the address. I do not know the right address to Granville. You can address to Mequon, Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin.7
