Harry O'Sullivan
New Glasgow – Harry O’Sullivan. Loving husband, devoted father and doting (great-) grandfather, Ernest ("Happy" Harry) O'Sullivan, longtime resident of 28 Prospect Street, died peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital on July 9 at the age of 88.
Harry was born in Lévis, Québec, and was a son of the late Thomas and Margaret (MacDonald) O'Sullivan. Following his schooling in Québec, Harry and his family moved to Nova Scotia, where he met his darling wife Pearl, to whom he was married for 54 years.
In his youth Harry was an avid hunter and fisherman and his love of the outdoors continued well into his eighties. He, Pearl, and their five children took frequent camping trips. In later years, he and Pearl drove their Prowler trailer to campgrounds around the Maritimes and were seasonal campers at both King's Head and Harbour Light campgrounds in Pictou County.
Harry joined the Pictou Highlanders during the Second World War, eventually earning the rank of sergeant.
Never afraid of hard work, Harry was employed in sales first with Keaye's Best Yeast and later Vactric Canada Ltd. He worked for many years as an agent for Quality Cleaners and then Bagnall's Cleaners before he retired in 1985. His cheery smile and kindness earned him the nickname, "Happy Harry."
The son of a CN stationmaster, Harry loved the railroad and was a collector of model trains. His passion for trains has been passed on to several of his grand- and great-grandchildren.
Harry was a devote Catholic and a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Minister of Hospitality. He and Pearl renewed their wedding vows at St. John's when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. During their married life, Harry and Pearl served as counselors for Christian Family Life by being examples to young couples contemplating marriage.
Harry will be remembered for his love of family, his daily recitation of the rosary and his enjoyment of life's simple pleasures, including family celebrations and his favourite TV shows, which he watched from the comfort of his recliner.
Harry was predeceased by his wife Pearl (Rodgers), his parents and his brothers Donald and Roderick.
He is survived by his children: Thomas (Nancy), Elizabeth (Ronald) LeLievre, Patricia, Henry (Anne), and Michael (Tracey Fleet); his eight grandchildren: Shannon, Ryan, Shane, Michelle, Mark, Megan, Tyler, and Jared; his seven great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Delaney, Alannah, Alora, Riley, Matthew and Benjamin; step grandchildren: Jared, Brynn and Aliya; chosen grandchildren: Emily and Madison; step great grandchildren: Finn and Wes; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitations for Harry will be Sunday, July 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Avenue, New Glasgow. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, High Street, New Glasgow at 11 am on Monday, July 13 with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial to follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Stellarton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital, the VON (Victorian Order of Nurses), or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent by visiting: www.rhporter.ca2

Occupation*1916Quebec, Canada; From Joe Lonergan in Quebec City - "You could not have spent most of your life in Quebec City without being at least peripherally aware of O’Sullivan College. It was on St. Eustache Street when I was growing up but St. Eustace disappeared with the creation of Blvd Henri Mercier. There was also one on 3rd Avenue in Limoilou. Currently it is on St. John Street where Kresge’s used to be. It first appeared in the old city directories in 1942-1943 when it was at 132 St. John listed as O’Sullivan Business College. Quebec City‘s O’Sullivan Business College was an offshoot of O’Sullivan’s Business College in Montreal, which was established in 1916. Its founder and first Principal was Eugene John O’Sullivan. His parents were married in St. Gabriel de Valcartier and he was baptized in Ancienne Lorette. His great grandparents, Mary Landers and John O’Sullivan were from Bansha, Tipperary. They arrived in Quebec in 1812 after first immigrating in 1811 to Newfoundland. E.J. O’Sullivan died June 28th 1941. The name O’Sullivan, the shamrocks in the grad mosaic and the preponderance of green in the images indicate the Irish connection."4

Immigration*1802Mary Landers; Newfoundland, Canada; They arrived in Quebec in 1811 after first immigrating in 1802 to Newfoundland.3
Anecdote7 March 1829Owen O'Sullivan; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; In testimony before the Road Commissioners, Owen states:
Owen Sullivan, of Valcartier, Farmer, having been called in said: -
I have 160 arpents of land in Valcartier, in the Seigniory of St. Gabriel. My Father went to Newfoundland in 1802, and kept a dry goods store there, and in the year 1811 came out to this country with his family. He brought some goods from Newfoundland, and kept a dry goods store in Quebec. The year after his arrival, he took a lease of Mr. Desbarats' farm at the Little River St. Charles, which he kept for 10 years: the rent was £140 a year: nine years out of ten on halves. At the end of this lease he went to Valcartier on the River Jacques Cartier, in the Seigniory of Fossambault, and there purchased about 500 acres of land. I went upon this farm with, upon an average, 4 or 5 men, and sometimes 15 or 16 men. The second year we had about 50 acres under culture, and obtained sixteen pounds ten shillings from the Agricultural Society as a reward for our exertions in clearing new land. My father afterwards purchased another farm in Valcartier where I now reside. My father has now about 100 acres cleared upon his farm; and I have about the same. I keep two horses, a yoke of oxen, and three cows, and some other young stock.

What are the inconveniences to which Agricultural Emigrants are subject here? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the situation of the Emigrant when compared with his previous situation in Europe? What from your experience is the best mode of surmounting the disadvantages to which he is exposed?-
The greatest inconveniency to which the Emigrant is subject is the want of good roads. The want of these prevents his bringing the produce of his farm to market.

What means have the poor Emigrants of cultivating their lands?-
It is customary to collect their friends and neighbours in what is called a Bee, and chop down, and pile ready for burning, five or six acres; which they put under crop immediately after. This is customary in the new Settlements, and is done alternately with all new Settlers.

How many days labour do you find that it requires to cut down and clear off one acre of land?-
It takes, for one man to cut down an acre of land, about eight days. It is difficult for one man to perfect the clearing; but by means if the Bees, which I have before mentioned, the settler is enabled to finish the clearing and put in his crop.

Are you acquainted with any poor settler near you who went on wild land without possessing any capital; and state his proceedings as far as you are acquainted with them?-
I know of some men in our Settlement who began without any means, and who are now tolerably well off. They began by working upon hire for others for some months; and in the spring by means of what they had earned, they contrived to live, and chop down part of their lands, and cleared it after the fire had run over the chopping, by means of Bees.4

Before us Rupert Genest LaBarre, Notary Public, for the Province of Quebec resident of the Parish of Notre-Dame-de-Chateau-Richer, in the District of Quebec, undersigned, appeared Eugene O'Sullivan, Esquire, Civil Servant from the Parish of Ange-Gardien, who being sick of body but of sound mind, memory, judgment and understanding as it appeared unto us, the undersigned Notary and witnesses hereinafter named, by his manner and his conversation, made his will, and declared it contained his last wishes, as follows:

As a Christian the Testator has recommended his soul to God asking for his merciful forgiveness.

The Testator wishes and orders that his just debts be paid and his wrongs satisfied.

The Testator also declared that he gives and bequeaths all his moveable and immoveable property that he leaves in dying to Dame Catherine Julia Cassin, his wife, and names her his universal legatee and for her to use, enjoy and dispose of in full property from the day of his decease forever, with the exception of the Business College of Quebec that he gives and bequeaths to Henry O'Sullivan and John O'Sullivan, his two brothers for the use of Eugene O'Sullivan and William O'Sullivan, his two sons, and he names as Testamentary Executors the said Dame Catherine Julia Cassin, his wife, Henry O'Sullivan, Land Surveyor of the Parish of St. Ambroise and John O'Sullivan, Land Surveyor of the City of Valleyfield, his two brothers, to execute the present will and he leaves to their discretion his funeral arrangements and he revokes all testaments and codicils that he may have heretofore made, declaring the present alone to contain his true last wishes.

Note by Patricia Balkcom: Eugene died on the same day that he wrote this will. He was reportedly 55 years of age. Although only two sons are mentioned in the will, he had at least 13 children. Six of these were with his wife, Mary Woodlock, and four of them predeceased him, the two sons mentioned were the remaining children of this marriage. He had at seven more children with his second wife, Catherine Julia Cassin.7

Residence*"In his youth, from 1812 to 1822, Owen O’Sullivan, born in 1798, resided not far from the Blue House. His parents occupied the farm of Pierre-Édouard Desbarats located on the north bank of the Saint-Charles river, near the IGA Poulin supermarket on boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel. When Mr. Desbarats came to spend the summer there, in his two-story stone house, Owen O’Sullivan was apparently in charge of his boat:
“Mr. P. E. Desbarats had bought a boat, with oars, sails, anchors, etc., in which, at high tide, he sailed up the St. Charles River to the Scott Bridge. It was he, Owen, who acted as captain."4

Anecdote*7 March 1829John O'Sullivan; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; In testimony before the Road Commissioners, Owen states:

They began by working upon hire for others for some months; and in the spring by means of what they had earned, they contrived to live, and chop down part of their lands, and cleared it after the fire had run over the chopping, by means of Bees.7
