Obituary*April 2023Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, Canada; "Mrs. Ruby Jean R. Neilson, 98, widow of the late Gordon J. Neilson, died April 1, 2023 in Amarillo, TX. She was born April 9, 1924 in Tyler, TX to the late Lester Bennie Renfro and Gertrude “Trudie” Velma Lochridge Renfro. She was a 1941 graduate of Tyler High School, and a graduate of the University of Houston in 1966 with a degree in elementary education. Before and during World War II she was a news reporter for the Camden (AR) News, the Texarkana Gazette, and the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph, where she first met her future husband. They were married in the chapel at Camp Fannin, which was near Tyler, on October 9, 1943.

After the war they moved to Wisconsin for several years, where her husband was from, and then back to Tyler. After several years a job took them to Houston, where they lived for almost 20 years. They returned to Tyler in 1973, where they were both active in real estate and members of First Presbyterian Church. She was also an antique dealer and a genealogist, being a founding member of the East Texas Genealogical Society.

As a widow, in 1999 she moved to Hillsboro to be near family. While in Hillsboro she was a member of Hillsboro’s First Presbyterian Church. She and a few friends started a group called The Yarn Spinners, who met weekly and made prayer shawls which they gave away to shut-ins and nursing homes. In 2014 she moved to Amarillo to live out her remaining years close to family.

She is survived by a daughter Laurie Neilson Dellis and her husband Michael D. Dellis of Amarillo, TX, and a son James R. Neilson and his wife Ria S. Neilson of Nokomis, FL. Also five grandchildren, Jeff Dellis and wife Eva of White Salmon, WA; Mark Dellis and wife Dr. Deena Hassan of Los Angeles, CA; Dr. Robert Neilson and wife Anne Morrison of Bend, OR, James R. Neilson, Jr. of Alexander, NC; Alexandra Neilson of Minneapolis, MN.; 2 great-grandsons Dorian and Silus Dellis and 1 great-granddaughter Mars Dellis; 2 nieces Dianna Presley of Belton, TX and Carol Turner of Round Rock, TX and a cousin Linda Herrod and husband Ronnie of Vicksburg, MS.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Jeffers “Jeffie” Neilson, II in 1960, her father in 1978, her husband in 1994, her mother in 2000, and a sister, Melrose Renfro Rhoden in 2009.

Services will be graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler, TX yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Gordon J. and Ruby J. Neilson Scholarship Fund at the University of Texas at Tyler, or the charity of your choice."6

Anecdote*1923"The Lindbergh story goes like this, according to A Life ofService, by Judith Redline Coopey. It was spring of 1923 and Dr.Bertha received two emergency calls from small nearby towns:one from Clyde, the other from Plain. The roads were impassableand the Wisconsin River was too rough to cross. Luckily, she hadheard that a young pilot had flown into Lone Rock the day beforeand was able to arrange for plane transport.As the pilot helped her into the cockpit she asked: “What’s yourname, young man?” the story goes.“Charles Lindbergh,” the pilot replied.“Well Charles, I’m in a hurry. Let’s be off.”Thanks to the doctor/pilot duo, both patients were saved. Andwhile Lindbergh was waiting for Dr. Bertha to finish tending herpatient, he gave free plane rides to pupils at St. Luke’s School inPlain, where he landed.In 1940, she retired to Avoca at age 72. “But when World WarII broke out, leaving the town without a physician, she took up herstethoscope again and practiced for another thirteen years,” notesThe American Woman’s Gazetteer. The publication also related theaforementioned story about the smuggled cadavers in her barn.Women students in her day were forbidden to see certain bodies,presumably male ones."6
Death*31 October 1961Dodge, Iowa County, Wisconsin, United States; Information from the Find A Grave website:

Bertha was the daughter of John Reynolds. There is a street named in her honor in the village of Lone Rock, where she practiced medicine.

Her eulogy by the Richland, Wisconsin, Area Chamber of Commerce reads;
Dr Bertha Reynolds
(1868-1961)

" Dr. Bertha,"as her patients called her, was a woman pioneer in the practice of medicine. She was born in 1868 in Thiensville, Wisconsin, into a family of doctors; nine of her brothers and male cousins entered the medical field. In 1892, Bertha's family moved to Nebraska where she attended the Lincoln Normal School and she taught for a few years.

But her real love was science. Bertha studied chemistry and botany at the University of Nebraska, but her male instructors discouraged her from pursuing her M.D., as did the many doctors in her own family. Undaunted, Bertha enrolled in the Women's Medical College of Chicago in 1898 and graduated three years later as an M.D.

She joined the practice of her brother, Dr. Nelson Reynolds, in Lone Rock in Richland County in 1902, having been unsuccessful in finding any other position. From the start, people called her Dr. Bertha to distinguish her from the "other Dr. Reynolds." In 1904, Dr. Nelson Reynolds moved to Milwaukee to advance his career, leaving the Lone Rock practice to Bertha. As the only available doctor, she began to win grudging acceptance.

Dr. Bertha rode her horse sidesaddle during decent weather and used a horse-drawn cutter in winter to reach her patients. She was the first in Lone Rock to purchase a Model T, which increased her ability to make house calls quickly. Sometimes, however, the elements conspired to make the Model T useless. In the spring of 1923, the roads were too muddy and the streams too high to permit any type of land travel, but Bertha had patients to reach. She learned that a barnstorming aviator had landed at the Lone Rock airport for service. After a quick consultation, Dr. Bertha was flown across the swollen Wisconsin River to Clyde and then to Plain by Charles Lindbergh, then an unknown aviation pioneer.

At age 71, in 1939, Dr. Bertha retired. A Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison was among the many accolades she received. But this was a short-lived retirement. In 1942, when Clyde's doctor was drafted, Dr. Bertha went back to work and continued to practice until 1953 when, at age 85, she again retired. Dr. Bertha Reynolds remains prominent among Wisconsin women who broke into male dominated professions."7,8
