No. 9556
Transcribed from Quebec Archives Microfilm #4M01-5213

On this day, the twelfth of December one thousand eight hundred & ninety, before us the undersigned Notaries Public for the Province of Quebec, residing at the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared Helen Shea, wife of Robert Johnson, Farmer, of Stoneham, who being in good bodily health and of sound mind, memory & understanding requested us the said Notaries to write down & receive her last will & testament which she dictated & made as follows, that is to say:

I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Johnson, Farmer, now residing with me, all and every the property real & personal, moveable and immoveable generally whatsoever without any exception or reserve and of which I may die possessed of, on condition however & subject by him to allow his father if he survives me to enjoy the same & have the usufruct thereof during his life time, and subject also by my said son to pay unto his sister Barbara Helen Johnson, who is now living with us, a sum of fifty dollars without interest two years after she will have left the house & residence of her parents.

I hereby appoint my said husband Executor of the present will & I revoke all wills and codicils at any time heretofore by me made.

It was thus made and dictated by the said Helen Shea, Testatrix, unto us the said Notaries, on the day and year first above written and the present will having been read over in full to the said Testatrix by Mtre. Philippe Huot, one of the said Notaries, in the presence of Mtre. George alias Gustave F.C. De Léry, the other Notary who was present during the execution hereof, she the said Testatrix declared to well understand the same & persisted therein as containing her true last will & testament.

Done and executed at the said City of Quebec, in the office of the said Philippe Huot on the day and year first above written, under the number nine thousand five hundred and fifty six of deeds recorded in the office of the said Philippe Huot, and requested to sign, she declared that she could neither write nor sign her name, the said Notaries having both signed with & in the presence of each other & of the said Testatrix, these presents having been first duly read according to law as aforesaid and the observance of all the formalities required for the validity of wills.

NOTE: Ellen Shea was born on 15 August 1820 and privately baptized on 21 August 1820 (Quebec Anglican Cathedral). She was the daughter of Joseph Shea and Jane Gainford. She married Robert Johnson (of Valcartier, Farmer, Bachelor) on 5 April 1842 (Quebec Wesleyan Methodist Church). She died on 4 May 1900 at the age of 79 years (burial record says 80 years but baptism date would indicate 79) and was buried in the Valcartier Anglican Cemetery on 6 May 1900.
