Immigration*1816Quebec City, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; This report was given to the Special Committee on March 7, 1829: "Richard Ward, of Valcartier, Farmer, having been called in Said: I come from the County of Wexford, in Ireland, and I arrived here in 1816. I brought with me my wife and two children: my passage cost me L15; I brought out a little money with me, and worked at Quebec for a year before I went to Valcartier on a farm belonging to Mr. Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher promised me one half of the farm on condition of going on with the settlement duties and clearing. I have cleared 30 acres. I took a farm at Valcartier from Mr. Campbell having seventy-firve acres cleared, at Twelve pounds a year. I lived by my work with I first went to Valcartier: there were many little jobs then in the settlement. When I was in the forest I had an opportunity of working out for my neighbors at my spare time: I got three shillings and nine pence a day for my work. I could employ a poor settler on his spare days, paying him one shilling and three pence a day, besides his board. I could employ him during the first winter at his arrival, at about ten shilllings a month. I know several who went upon wild land without possessing any capital, who worked for other people as well as for themselves, and in this way sustained themselves."5

In the 5th concession, he has cleared 4 arpents. Some of his neighbors in both concessions are John O'Neill, and James and Edward Sweeney. It is possible that the land in the 5th concession for these men was used for woodlots.7

Birth*before 1816County Wexford, Leinster Province, Ireland; Richard states that he and his wife came to Quebec in 1816 with 2 children. One of these was Jane, who died in 1821, aged 7 years. The second child may be the female listed in the 1831 census as an unmarried female between the ages of 14 and 44, however, this also could be a servant as there is one Catholic listed in his family. If this is a servant, then it is possible, that the child could have died between 1825 and 1831 as their are 5 children listed in each of the 1825 and 1831 cenuses and Elizabeth was born in 1828. I searched the Holy Trinity Church and Augibny Church records between 1825 and 1831 and did not find a Ward burial.1,2,3
