Name VariationDenis Cassin; Denis was the name given in the baptismal record, however, later records indicate his name was Daniel J. Cassin. It appears that he might have changed his name as it is still listed in the 1871 Census as Denis when he was 20 years old. There is no evidence that there were twins in the church baptismal records.1

Birth*February 1797Shanderry, Offerlane Civil Parish, Queen's County (Laois), Leinster Province, Ireland; This date is an assumed date based on the date of the baptismal record.1
Baptism21 February 1797Castletown, Offerlane Civil Parish, Queen's County (Laois), Leinster Province, Ireland; Baptismal Record in the register for 1797 states:
"Shanderry, Feb. 21, Denis, son of Mich. Cassin & Margt. Kelly. Sponsors: Denis Dunne and Mary Kelly."1
Census1825St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Denis is not listed on this census. I assume that the "Denis Cassin" listed on the map of 1819 of Valcartier is this Denis, son of Michael. Michael probably got a lot for his oldest son when they arrived from Ireland, but possibly Denis did not actually live on the lot until he married in 1829. In the 1831 census , Denis is listed beside Michael, which fits the lots listed on the 1819 map, so I believe the Denis on the map is this Denis and not another Denis Cassin.2
(Witness) Baptism3 June 1827William Corrigan; St-Ambroise-de-la-Jeune-Lorette Catholic Church, Loretteville, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "...born 8 days ago...of William Corrigan, farmer of Valcartier and Margaret Brown...Godfather Denis Cassin and Godmother Margaret Cassin..."3
Land*23 February 1828St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "Denis Cassin bought from Hon. William Burns 4 lots of land containing 540 arpents for the sum of 340 pounds. This land had belonged to the late Jacob Pozer, before Nat. Berthelot & colleagues, 29 Aug. 1818. William Burns was a member of the Legislative Council."
Comment: This land was across from Majella Murphy's house on Murphy Road. It was expropriated in 1914. Denis paid a ot of money for it. Majella doesn't know if Denis actually lived on this piece of land. At the time lots were going for about 10 pounds. Each lot was about 90 arpents. An arpent is 192 feet long, an acre is 204 feet long, an arpent is about .85 of an acre.4
Note1829St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Dennis Cassin is listed as one of the residents who was paid for working on building the oatmeal mill. It appears that he worked 48 days.5
Land12 May 1829St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Notarial record #397 of Roger Lelievre show a Land Grant (cession) in the Seignory of St. Gabriel from John Stewart, Esq. to Denys Cassin, Lot 13 in the Third Concession: "Denys Cassin, farmer living in the parish of St. Ambroise...named Valcartier...a piece of land situated in the said Parish of the the Seignory on the Third Concession northwest of Jacques Cartier River being Number Thirteen, being three arpents in front by thirty arpents in depth bordered on the said depth on the Second Concession, bordered on the northwest by Lot 14 and on the other side by Lot 12..." (this is about 575 ft by 5760 ft or about 76 acres)6

My Notes: My Notes: Denis died three and a half months after writing this will. His wife had died almost twenty years earlier. Joseph was his oldest son, (although there were five daughters born before Joseph). Joseph was twenty-six years old when this will was written. By 1873, Joseph had married a woman in Ontario and relocated there.
From Eric Corrigan: I can say that Mic Corrigan who married Mary Jane Shea in 1872, my great grandfather, bought this lot of land Number 7 as well as the neighboring McNichol’s lot number 6, and these two lots of land were sold by my father and mother in 1974. I do not have the official dates or sale information.. Majela claims that he saw somewhere that when Mic Corrigan bought that lot from the heirs of Denis Cassin that he had to get clearance from some Cassins in or near Ottawa Ontario. From Memory I think there was an Elizabeth Cassin who married a brother of Mic that was living near Ottawa Ont. Follow-up: Patrick Corrigan, brother of Mic (Michael) Corrigan, married Elizabeth Cassin, daughter of Denis - it is possible they relocated to Ottawa but I have not been able to trace them.

Bridget O'Rielly b. c 1810, d. 12 Mar 1880
Marriage*9 January 1832Bridget O'Rielly; Basilque Notre-Dame, Montreal, Montreal County, Quebec, Canada; The following is a marriage record for a Edward Cassidy and Bridget Riley. We are not completely sure that this is our Edward Cassin, however, the following points seem to make it plausible:
1. The date is 11 months before they had their first child.
2. Parents of Edward are listed as Michael Cassidy (sic) and Margaret Kelly of Queen's County, Ireland. These are the correct names of the parents of Edward Cassin and they did come from Queen's County. However, in 1832, they were farming in Valcartier, Quebec.
3. Edward Cassin married a Bridget O'Reilly. (Riley is the spelling in the church record.)
4. Edward had a brother named John and the witness is listed as "John Cassidy". However, he signs his name as Cassidy and not Cassin, which is concerning. We compared that signature with one in his Marriage Contract in 1835 and there are some similiarities in the writing.

Translation from the French:
The ninth of January, eight hundred and thirty-two, after the publication of three banns of marriage...between Edward Cassidy, living in this Parish, son of age of Michael Cassidy, farmer, and of Margaret Kelly of Queens County in Ireland on the one part. And of Bridget Riley, living in this Parish, daughter of age of Owen Riley, carpenter, and of Ellen Donhue of the county of Cavan in Ireland on the other part...in the presence of John Cassidy, brother of the groom and Jean Baptiste San??..."4,5

Birth*July 1811Queen's County (Laois), Leinster Province, Ireland; This birthdate is based on the age given in the burial record of 76 yrs, 4 months (tombstone states 77 years). However, he most likely was not born then as his brother, Thomas was likely born in January 1811 as evidenced by his baptism on 29 Jan 1811. It's possible that Edward was born in 1810, as his gravestone states he was 77. Census records for 1852 and 1861 though would put his birth as 1812.2,3
Immigration*1818Ireland

Census*11 January 1852St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Listed as "Edward Cassan", a 40 year old Catholic farmer, Catholic, born in Ireland, and living with his wife and seven children and next door to his brother Denis's family and his mother Margaret who is living with Denis. Charles Kack is his other neighbor. Edward and Bridget lived on Lot #853 which was eventually sold to Edward Cassin (their son) and Mary Jane Brennan and remained in her name until about 1918 when it was sold to Fred Kack and in 2000 belongs to his son, Cecil Kack.
Listed with him:
Bridget "Reilly", born Ireland, Catholic, age 38.
Michael Cassin, labourer, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 19.
John Cassin, labourer, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 17.
Anne Cassin, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 15.

Mary Cassin, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 11.
Bridget Cassin, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 9.
Catherine Cassin, born B. Canada, Catholic, age 7.
It also states that there was a death in the family in the last year (says Jun 9, fever). This column was supposed to be for age & cause of death. They did have a 6 year old son die in February of 1851. They also had a baby born in December, 1851, who appears to have been left off the census.
The agricultural Census states:

The spouses declared they could not sign. Act read.

Note: This translation is from Bernie Monaghan who states the wife's name is Brennan (parents Thomas Brennan and Elizabeth Boyd). However, the church records state that her name is Lynch (parents Edward James Lynch and Johanna Boyd). The entry in the church records is placed at the end of 1888 and not in the October order. Later burial records and tombstone engraving indicate that her name was Mary Jane Brennan. It is possible since the entry was made by the priest at a later date that he got the names mixed up.10

And for the execution of this my Last Will and Testament I hereby appoint my brother, Thomas Cassin, of the said Parish of Saint Gabriel of Valcartier, to be my Testamentary Executor into whose hands I hereby divest myself of all my said property from the day of my decease according to the law.

And I hereby revoke all former wills or codicils by me heretofore declaring the present to be my Last Will & Testament. Marriage*28 October 1888Mary Jane Brennan; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic Church, St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "On the 14th of October 1888, whereas the dispensation was granted by Mgr.
E. Alexandre Taschereau, Archbishop of Quebec, to the effect of lifting the prohibition of the church, which prevents the contracting of marriage together Edward Cassin, Catholic, son of age of the late Edward Cassin and of the late Bridget O'Reilly, of this parish, on the one part; and Mary Jane Brennan, protestant, daughter of age of the late Thomas Brennan and of the late Elizabeth Boyd, on the other part; whereas also the dispensation or the publication of the banns of marriage by the said Archbishop, and not having discovered any impediment to the said marriage, we the undersigned priest, Cure of this parish, have received their mutual consent to this marriage in the presence of William McClosky, who has signed and Agnes Greary, who declared she could not sign. The spouses declared they could not sign. Act read.

H. McGratty, priest."
