| Obituary* | March 1822 | The Charleston Courier Newspaper, Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, United States; "The death of Com. John Cassin, late commanding officer of the Southern Naval Station of the United States, has been already announced to this community; the melancholy intelligence has been received with every expression of unfeigned sorrow, and his remains consigned to the grave with those demonstrations of honor and respect due to the distinguished veteran, and to departed merit. It is much to be lamented that this worthy officer has survived his arrival in this City but a few months only. It was indeed, under circumstances of severe affliction that he had landed here, being a few days previously, while on his passage from Norfolk, deprived, by death, of his amiable consort. His abode with us was, however, sufficiently long to bring to our knowledge many of those excellent qualities, which adorn human nature, and which he eminently possessed. His goodness of heart, and sincerity of manner were such, that all who enjoyed a personal acquaintance with him, esteemed him and became his friend. His disposition was generous, frank and accessible; these liberal and noble traits of character were justly appreciated; and especially secured to him the respect of those who were under his command, as well as that sincere and affectionate regard which attaches to an elder brother, or father. Com. Cassin was a native of Pennsylvania; his talents were early devoted to his Country, both in the land and the sea service; in the latter, he has for many years, maintained a high rank. He served in the Army during the crisis that 'tried men's souls;' he fought at the battle of Trenton, and his patriotic aid in defense of the rights of the American Republic, was employed at other interesting periods of the Revolutionary War. The Commodore's health had been observed to decline for several weeks past. It was not, however, until ten days anterior to his decease, that an obstruction in the liver, to which he had formerly been subject, excited alarm. The violet and rapid progress of his disease baffled every remedy which skill could devise, and rendered unavailing the tender and unremitting attention of his family and friends. He expired on Sunday the 24th inst., March 1822, about 4 o'clock p.m. in the 62nd year of his age. May he rest in peace."18 |
| Obituary | 26 March 1822 | This is a transcription penned by Joseph Willcox, his original source was the American Daily Advertiser, a Philadelphia newspaper that published this obituary on March 26, 1822. "Charleston (S.C.), March 26, 1822. Commodore Cassin was buried yesterday afternoon at the Roman Catholic chapel with all the honors belonging to his rank and services. The vessels in the harbour wore their colours at half mast; a respectable and numerous body of citizens and friends, together with the United States Marines, the company of United States soldiers from Fort Moultrie, the sailors in port, officers of the fourth brigade, the Washington light infantry and Irish volunteers, accompanied the funeral. The melancholy sound of minute guns gave the last farewell to the departure of a veteran."17 |

Cassin; Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States; "Michael Cassin", white, male, age 26, head of household #1075, farmer, real estate worth $100, personal property $50, born Canada. Living with him is his wife and two children. They are living next to Corrigan brothers, Michael and John and their families, (who are the brothers of Michael's wife, Jane) and also the Mooneys who were also from Valcartier. It is interesting that Michael is found in the 1860 census for both Valcartier and Wisconsin. The Wisconsin census was taken in July and Michael is listed with his wife and two children but the Valcartier lists him as living with his parents, married and does not list his wife or children. However, his sisters are also listed as married and also living in this house even though their husbands are not listed. It is possible that the census taker listed them as the children of Edward even though they were not physically living there. Listed living with Michael: Jane Cassin, age 24, born Canada. Margaret Cassin, age 3, born Canada. Edward Cassin, age 1, born Canada.3 |

Cassin, Jr., son of former Assemblyman John J. Cassin of Rensselaer, was drowned Saturday while skating on a pond which had been formed by the freshet in the southern part of Rensselaer. The young man was skating in company with two young ladies when the ice gave way. All three were thrown into the water. The girls could swim and managed to keep up until aid arrived. Cassin could not swim. Two young men near by hurried to the spot. One, lying on the ice near the place, caught hold of one of the girls. The ice gave way, precipitating him into the water. The other rescuer threw a plank along the ice. One of the girls caught the board and was taken out. As she was being drawn out she cried to Cassin to catch her dress. The young man was exhausted and sank. The other girl and the first rescuer were taken out on the board. Cassin's body was recovered shortly afterward. He was a nephew of Rev. John Walsh of this city. The Democrat Chronicle on February 18, 1900 states that his body was recovered and that was a brother-in-law of Millionaire Archibald J. McClure of Albany.3 |

From the Biographical Dictionary: "Born on a farm in Upper Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, about a mile from the present town of Media." These two statements do not agree with each other as argued by F.H. Shelton in the Cassinia in November, 1918. He was able to ascertain that indeed it was on a 40 acre tract of land near Media in Upper Providence.3,2,4,5 |
| School* | circa 1827 | John attended the Quaker boarding school named Westtown School. The school is still located in Westtown, PA.6 |

| Occupation* | 1842 | Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States; This information was found on the Towhee.net website, edited by Harry Fuller of McMinnville, Oregon. John Cassin, the ornithologist, had five species of western birds and also some species of insects named after him. He became the honorary curator of the National Academy of Science in Philadelphia in 1842 and from Wikipedia: "He is considered to be one of the giants of American ornithology, and was America's first taxonomist, describing 198 birds not previously mentioned by Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon. Cassin drew, printed and hand-colored many of the illustrations for the Pacific Railroad Surveys as the western regions of the United States were explored. He was named curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences in 1842, and after John T. Bowen's death, he took control of the Academy. His "Illustrations" was intended to be a 3-volume work, but financial considerations prevented more than one volume being published". From the Cassinia article: "He seems to have been a good deal of a politician both in city affairs and in those of the Academy, and served for a time in the Philadelphia City Councils. His brusque manner and determination made him a number of enemies - temporarily at least; though at heart he was kind, and to his friends always cordial and genial."1,6,9,10,3 |
| Land* | 15 January 1844 | Thomas Cassin; Media, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States; ..."converyed to his son John, also for 'natural love and affection' and the sum of $2600." This was referring to the 40 acre property and house that had originally belonged to Thomas' grandfather, Luke, and then to his father, Thomas.5 |
| Land* | 2 April 1846 | Media, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States; John conveyed the land and house that he had received from hi father in 1844 to Daniel James for $3025 as John and his family had moved to Philadelphia.5 |
| Death* | 10 January 1869 | Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States; This information is given in Wikipedia entitled "John Cassin". It states the date of death and that the cause of death was arsenic poisoning caused by his handling of bird skins preserved with arsenic. He reportedly knowingly suffered from arsenic poisoning for over two decades.6,11 |
