Research Note*Denis Cassin; I think it is possible that Michael and Denis both born in the 1770s are brothers or possibly cousins:
1. Both were married in the same Catholic Parish of Castletown.
2. Military records for each of them put there birth places close together (however, I have no proof that these are THEIR military records).
3. Michael has a son named Denis.
Birth*circa 1772Queen's County (Laois), Leinster Province, Ireland; Date of birth is based on the age of 70 listed on his tombstone. However, the stone says he died in 1843 and the church records state he died in 1842. I suspect that the church records are correct as the stone was erected in 1853, when Michael' daughter died, about 10 years later.
There is also a military record for a "Michael Cassin" aged 38 in 1810, born in Upperwoods Parish in Queen's County. I don't have proof that this is the same Michael Cassin, but it seems quite possible as the age would match his age and baptismal records for his children that were from the church in Castletown, Queeen's County, stating he was living in Shanderry.1,2,3,4

Military*between 1800 and 1814At this time I have no proof that these are the records of my ancestor, Michael Cassin, but the date of birth, place of birth seems plausible. It would also make sense that Michael would have served in the military as many of the early settlers of Valcartier were given land as a result of military service. Also, several of the first settlers (the Abraham and Bethel families) were from the Upperwoods area of Queen's County.

Burial*13 October 1842St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier Catholic Church, St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Transcription of church burial record: "On the thirteenth of October, one thousand eight hundred and forty two, we, the undersigned curate of this Parish have buried the body of Michael Cassin who died one' yesterday aged Seventy years, lawful husband of Marg. (could say Mary) Cassin of Valcartier; present Nicholas Vandal and Charles Martel who cannot write. H. Paisley, Priest." (It is possible that this indicated he died the "day before yesterday" which would match the date on his gravestone).
Michael has a gravestone erected in the St. Gabriel's Cemetery that appears to have been erected by his son-in-law, William Neilson.
The tombstone inscription states:
     Contiguous lies the body
      of her affectionate
      Father
      Michael Cassin
      who died
on the 11th of Oct 1843
          Aged 70 years

     (on the side)
     Underneath this stone
      Lies the body of
      Margaret
The affectionate and Beloved Wife of
      William Neilson
who died on the 22nd day of May 1853
Aged 38 years 6 mons and 22 days
This memorial was erected by her husband.
      July 1 1853
(Note: The stone states Michael died in 1843 whereas the church records say 1842. Since the stone was erected 10-11 years after Michael's death, it would seem that the church record of 1842 is more accurate.)11,1
Note*7 July 1846According to Notarial records of Dominique Lefrancois, Michael sold land to Charles Fitzpatrick - was this land disposed of after his death? I have only seen the index, not the deed - to be checked at Quebec archives.

Migration*between 1859 and 1860Lebanon, Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States; Moved from Valcartier, Quebec to Wisconsin. It is interesting that Michael is found in the 1860 census for Wisconsin and in the 1861 Census for Valcartier. The Wisconsin census was taken in July and Michael is listed with his wife and two children but the Valcartier lists him as living with his parents, married and does not list his wife or children. However, his sisters are also listed as married and also living in this house even though their husbands are not listed. It is possible that the census taker listed them as the children of Edward even though they were not physically living there. Some Valcartier researchers believe that the 1861 census was actually taken a year earlier.6
Census*14 July 1860Mequon, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States; "Michael Cassin", white, male, age 26, head of household #1075, farmer, real estate worth $100, personal property $50, born Canada. Living with him is his wife and two children. They are living next to Corrigan brothers, Michael and John and their families, (who are the brothers of Michael's wife, Jane) and also the Mooneys who were also from Valcartier. It is interesting that Michael is found in the 1860 census for both Valcartier and Wisconsin. The Wisconsin census was taken in July and Michael is listed with his wife and two children but the Valcartier lists him as living with his parents, married and does not list his wife or children. However, his sisters are also listed as married and also living in this house even though their husbands are not listed. Anecdote*circa 1895St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; These two poems (sent to me by Eric Corrigan) were written about a neighborly dispute between Patrick Cassin and John Hornby, his next door neighbor. The priest referred to is Father Hugh McGrath.

Some farmers loaf around the courts, or lug the rod and line
The proper time to save your hay is when the sun doth shine
Dark clouds they are a-gathering, soon heavy rains may spill
So I’ll tell you of two champions who boxed on the Mill Hill.

Those champions of Valcartier shouldn’t wear the ball and chain
Out there I own a patch of land and there I heard the game
While home on my vacation my on those islands mowing hay
This news so true, I'II tell to you I heard on Saturday.

On the eighteenth of July, my boys
Those tidings came to me
Two farmers and their loving wives did sorely disagree.
John had confused Annie's waterworks and played some nasty game,
Don't aggravate your neighbour's wife or you may get the same,

The very first blow that Paddy struck
The bully ran away, then like a gamecock
Paddy knew for he had nobly won the day.
Said he was the largest quadruped that ever chewed a cud.
The battle was a dirty one, more talk in it than blood.

It happened here not long ago,
Some preachers did combine to stop the sale of Whisky
Or the storekeepers they’d fine.
They went before our council, a petition they did lay
They swore it was a scandal to so break the Sabbath Day.

Oh Father Hugh, it wasn't you, who put out whisky down
For I know how kind you treated me; last spring when I was down
You know it was the Lord’s delight to see his friends in glee
For once he made three extra pots of wine at Galilee.
By Charles Wolff

Oh Father Hugh, what can you do
But pray to make amends,
Just open up a big saloon
And invite the boys to attend,
Teach them to settler their disputes
With knuckles on the green, and never in a court house,
Let one of them be seen.

My hay is cut and in the barn
And I must take the train,
I won’t know how this suit comes off
Till I come home again.
But Paddy made old Kruger run
As one night he outdistanced me,
And when I get to old Quebec
I think I’ll have a spree.

Those cannibals may eat me
Or lock me in a jail,
But Doctor Rose or Miss McCoy,
Will get me out on bail,
I have confessed, give me a rest,
Excuse my crippled hand;
We’ll drink a toast to Paddy,
Long may he plough and sow the land.

Patrick Cassin is shown on Lot No. 291, value $550.00, Total $71.50, yearly $5.96. Eric Corrigan remembers that there used to be a hill in front of the lot and it was referred to as Paddy Cassin's hill by the older people of the area. Other Cassins living Northeast of this, on lots 854 - 858. Eric was born on Lot #860 which his grandfather Michael Corrigan bought from a McNickel and also lot 859 from the heirs of Denis Cassin in 1872.
Migration*1912Rose Ann Holton; Patrick and his family moved to Hamilton. His death registration stated that he had been in Ontario for 12 years (died 1924). I don't know why they relocated, however, Rose Ann Holton's sister, Margaret (Squibb), was living in Hamilton. Sons Mike and Bill married girls from Hamilton and were then transferred to Montreal. There are no Cassins listed in the Hamilton City Directory in 1912 so they must have arrived after that was published.16

Note*8 November 1923Thomas Patrick Cassin; Buffalo, Erie County, New York, United States; Patrick went to visit his son, Thomas, who was living in Buffalo, NY. This is the information given on the border crossing application: Patrick Cassin, age 58, born Valcartier, Quebec, married, male, carpenter, can read and write, Canadian of Irish descent, living at 112 Alpine Ave., Hamilton with his wife, Annie. Appears he is travelling alone and the ticket cost $30. He had been in the USA before - to Saginaw, Michigan between 1882 and 1886. He intends to return home and not become a citizen. He is not a polygamist, anarchist, and has never been in prison or an almhouse. He is not travelling for purpose of employment. He is 5'8" tall, fair complexion, weighs 159 pounds and has brown eyes. He does not have a bag with him. The appliction contains his signature. It appears that Thomas is living at 160 Magoza Street but it is difficult to read the street name. It appears that his age is stated incorrectly - he would have been 63 at the time.7

My comments: Patrick Reynolds, son of Peter Reynolds and Brigitt Donnelly is married to Jean Nicols in Loretteville, Quebec in 1826 and one of the witnesses is Mary Henney. So somehow, his parents must be related to either Elijah Haney or Mary Dutch.6

Note by Patricia Balkcom: Although it is difficult to say for sure, I believe this Mary was the daughter of Denis Murphy and Mary Donnelly. The will states she was a spinster and there is this note in the St. Gabriel Catholic records in Valcartier: "...the body of Mary Murphy, spinster, of the said parish, daughter of the late Denis Murphy and of the late Catherine Donnelly of County Wexford, Ireland. Deceased on the 4th inst., aged about 73 years.” This burial was seven years after this will was written.19
