Obituary*9 July 2016Midland, Midland County, Texas, United States; "Richard Joel Cassin passed away on July 8, 2016 at his home in Midland. He had cancer.

He was born on June 7, 1919 in Mount Vernon, New York. He was a combat veteran of World War II, where he served in Europe in the field artillery as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After the war, he earned degrees in geology and engineering from the University of Illinois.

After graduation, he went to work at the Illinois State Geological Survey, where he met a fellow geologist and his future wife, Nancy Cassin. They were married on October 9, 1948; Nancy passed away in 2002 after 53 years of marriage. They raised their six children in Casey, Illinois, Midland, Texas, and Littleton, Colorado before returning to Midland permanently in 1975.

Richard was active in the Midland Gem and Mineral Society and the YMCA. He was an avid hiker, geologist, rock collector, and gardener. He shared his passions throughout his life by volunteering as a swim for life coach, gymnastics coach, and teacher of lapidary, silversmithing, and geology. He will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, and devotion to his family and friends.

He is survived by his six children (Steven Grover Cassin, Lee Elizabeth Cassin, Jan Louise Cassin, Beverly Jo Cassin, and Gail Margaret Cassin, and Shirley Cassin Woodward) and six grandchildren (Richard Sackett, Loren Sackett, Katie Cassin, Mac Cassin, Rob Stables, and Beverly Stables).
