The names listed here have been extracted from Marianna O’Gallagher’s book “Grosse Ile, Gateway to Canada, 1832-1937”,  published by Caraig Books, 1984.

In the book she lists the names of 619 children that were listed in a register kept in 1847 and 1848 by the “La Societe charitable des Dames catholiques de Quebec” when they operated an orphanage and school in Quebec City.  It is possible that many of these children came from Ireland through Grosse Ile.  Although they are called “orphans”, some had parents who were alive but for various reasons were unable to care for them.  I have not been able to find the majority of those children placed in Valcartier area homes in the 1852 Census, so it is possible that these were temporary placements.

Thank you to Audrey Henderson for transcribing the spreadsheet.  My comments are in the Remarks column in red colored script.  (Question marks were in the original records).
