Thomas, son, born April, 1907 in Quebec, age 4. John, son, born December 1910 in Quebec, age 1.2 |
Military* | 16 January 1940 | On this date, John joined the Canadian Infantry Corps (Royal Montreal Regiment). He served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe and returned to civil life on October 8th, 1946. He retired as a Staff Sergeant and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France Germany Star, the War Medal 1939-45, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal Ribbon and Clasp. At the time of demobilization, he was 36 years and 10 months old. He and his brother, Thomas, served together and were said to look like twins.3 |
Occupation* | 1946 | Phillip Sheen, nephew states: "He was a life long bachelor and had a career with the Canadian Customs Department after serving in the military during WWII. When he retired from Canada Customs, a large party was held for him at the local hockey arena in Verdun and the Deputy Mayor of Lake Placid gave the following speech. John began his career in sports sometime in the twenties as a member of the Maple Leaf Athletic Club in Verdun. This club was formed by a group of teen-agers who by a lot of hard work provided skating and hockey facilities for many of the kids of Verdun. During the thirties when a lot of people had very little money, John devoted most of his time helping to organize fast ball and hockey. He was a valued member of the Verdun Hockey Board and of the Verdun Fast ball League. During WWII John served overseas with the Royal Montreal Regiment returning as a Staff Sargent. On his return to civilian life he entered the Canadian Customs Department and also took up where he left off with his interest in sports. In 1948 a great friend died, his name, Norman Dawe, like John he had devoted his life to helping youngsters. John and some friends decided to form the Norman Dawe Memorial Association. This association has been operating leagues in Atom, Mosquito, Pee Wee and Bantam hockey for the past 24 years and as you may have guessed, John was and still is the prime mover in keeping this association going. Another good friend and co-worker with John, Martha Liddell, died a few years ago and John decided to operate teams in her name and at his expense. Needless to say, this has cost John quite a sum of money, but has given him a great deal of satisfaction. John is also registrar for all sports in the City of Verdun, all concerned have a great respect for this big hearted Irishman. This well known and popular volunteer has been honored for his dedication towards minor sports in Verdun, some of these awards are as follows: 1961 - Verdun Athletic Unsung Heros Association (V.A.U.H.A.). This award presented to make known the unknown volunteer worker. 1967 - Centennial Medal of Merit. This award presented for his efforts on behalf of the youth of Verdun. Canadian Government Award 1971 - Volunteer Worker of The Year. City of Verdun Recreation Department award. What John will get into next is your guess, but you can bet it will have to do with kids. This has been accomplished by a man with no family of his own and could be enjoying the fruits of life like most bachelors do. John Holden has been associated with Lake Placid since 1958 when our first out of town trip was to Verdun Quebec and John was there to greet the coaches and players as he has in all the years since then. The Lake Placid Pee Wee Association hockey players all know John Holden because of the many gifts to them in the form of jerseys, socks, jackets, trophies and his always jolly hello, and a helping hand any time we need help. We are certainly proud and happy to dedicate this program to this big hearted Irishman as the Canadians call him. May we wish you good luck and many more years of active life in youth programs both in Canada and the United States. 3 |

Occupation* | Quebec, Canada; Grandson Phillip Sheen states: "I was 13 when he passed away and I always remember him as a big man (6 ft+) and my understanding is that he was a pastry chef for the Canadian Pacific Railway before he retired. My family was poor in those times (although as kids we never noticed) and my grandfather often carried a bag of coal to us in the winter. This was a distance of at least a mile. Both my grandparents were kind and loving people."8 | |

Military* | circa 1942 | England; Phillip Sheen, nephew states: He was a member of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada and was killed in an accident while serving in England during the Second World War. The family story is that he was pulling extra duty while a fellow soldier was on furlough getting married. He was killed when a truck he was riding in rolled over. I have the DOD records that were sent to my grandfather at the time of his death. From another researcher, Roger B. - " I am afraid unfortunately that I am not a relative of Thomas Francis Holden, but my Mother Rose and Father Edward and her sister Jan met Tommy and Johnny Holden during the WW2 in West Wittering Sussex and the two families also attended Thomas’s funeral in 1943. In my research I have discovered that the Canadian Army was billeted all along the South Coast of Sussex and Parham House, an Elizabethan property and ancient deer park of 330 acres, was the centre of the South Downs Training area. Half of the house was requisitioned for the Canadian officers with the family of the owners in the other half. The1st, 2nd and 3rd Canadian Infantry Divisions were stationed in the Park in Nissen huts. Also some Canadian troops were also billeted in Holiday Camps in the Wittering area, 7 miles south of Chichester. The camps were Gibson’s Camp, Sussex Ideal Holiday Camp in Bracklesham Bay, the Bracklesham Bay Hotel and various property’s in Birdham all about 7 miles south of Chichester on the coast. Because of the intense German bombing of Portsmouth Navy Harbour, Mothers and their children were evacuated out of the Portsmouth area where both sisters were living and so they moved to Cunliffe House in West Wittering, a small village on the Sussex coast, to stay with Commander Duncan Hodson and his wife Peggy who they had known in Portsmouth. Jan with her two children and my Mother now pregnant with moi!! This is where the family met Thomas and John Holden. I have realized looking at your web site that I have come across the 1911 census showing Thomas & John with their parents and siblings in the past, but discounted it because both families thought that Thomas and John were twins! Where as they may have looked like twins! It just goes to show how thing can get distorted being passed down from each generation."3 |
