He entered the navy as midshipman Dec. 5, 1798; was promoted to lieutenant Aug. 25, 1800, and served in Preble's squadron during the war with Tripoli. He was included in the vote of thanks to Preble and his officers by act of Congress March 3, 1805. He was promoted to master-commandant April 25, 1808, and commanded the frigate 'John Adams' in 1811-14; commissioned captain July 24, 1813, and rendered good service in defence of Craney Island and James River in June, 1813, capturing three barges and forty prisoners when the British were repelled in this attack. He was then stationed at Norfolk, where he died. (Original source - Applecton's Cyclopedia of Amer. Biography)".

Before me the undersigned Notary Public residing in the City of Quebec, personally came and appeared Mr. Charles Tate of the Parish of St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette, farmer, son of Mr. James Tate and of Dame Catherine Dunn, his wife of the one part,

And Miss Elizabeth Manning, spinster of full age, of the same parish of St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette, daughter of the late Michael Manning and of Dame Ann Crotty, his wife, of the other part.

Which said parties have stipulated, covenanted, and agreed to and with each other in manner and form following, viz.,

The said Charles Tate and Elizabeth Manning have promised to take each other in marriage and to solemnize their said marriage in due form of law in the Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church as soon as possible. It has been and it is by these presents expressly understood that the said parties shall be common in property of all and every moveable and immovable properties they shall in future acquire or possess and that they actually possess according to the Custom of Paris.

The said Charles Tate by these presents constitutes in favour of the said Elizabeth Manning hereof accepting a dower prefixed of the sum of one thousand dollars to be taken on all and every the immovable properties which the Charles Tate actually possesses or hereafter possesses, the whole clear of all incumberances and hinderances whatsoever, for by the said Elizabeth Manning to do, enjoy and dispose of the same in full propriety whenever it will become due.

Thus done and executed at the City of Quebec in the office of André Elphrid Tessier Notary, on the fifteenth day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty seven, under the number two thousand nine hundred and fifty one, in the presence of Mr. George Manning, of the City of Quebec, stevedore, brother of the said future spouse and in the presence of Mr. Ignace Désroches of the City of Quebec, shoemaker, who have signed these presents with the said Elizabeth Manning, the said Charles Tate having declared not to know how to write or sign his name demand thereof by me duly made, after reading done.
