On this twenty seventh day of April, one thousand nine hundred and seven, before me Cyrille Renaud Public Notary residing in the parish of St. Ambroise of Jeune Lorette undersigned personally appeared Thomas Hartery, Farmer, residing in the Parish of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, who being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding hath requested me the said Notary to write down and receive in due form of law his last will and testament which he has declared in manner and form following, that is to say:

Firstly and principally, I most willingly resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator in the humble hope that he will receive it to his favour through the sole merits and intercession of Jesus Christ my Saviour.

Secondly, I desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid by my Executor hereinafter named as soon as possible after my death.

Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my nephew Francis Joseph McLaughlin all my moveable and immoveable properties wherever the same may be found and to whatever the same shall amount hereby constituting my said nephew Francis Joseph McLaughlin my universal legatee.

Fourthly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my said nephew Francis Joseph McLaughlin as Executor of this last will and testament.

Fifthly, I revoke all will and testament I may have heretofore made and I declare the present to be my only true last will and testament.

Done and passed at St. Gabriel of Valcartier in the residence of Francis Joseph McLaughlin under Notarial Number three thousand five hundred and seventy [two].

And after the reading of the present will by the Notary, to the Tesatator in presence of John Bowles of Ste. Catherine and Michael Woodlock of St. Gabriel of Valcartier, both farmers witnesses requested for the validity of the present witnesses have signed in the presence of each other.

John Bowles, his signature;
Michael Woodlock, his signature;

Notes by Patricia Balkcom: Thomas died 12 days later. It appears that Thomas never married and had no children as heirs. He had four siblings but they all predeceased him, and so he left his estate to Francis McLaughlin, son of his sister, Mary.4
