Note* | From the book by Tom Stout (1921), Montana: Its Story and Biography, Vol.3, p. 1263 : Francis Daniel O'Neill was a prominent and well known ranchman of Powder River, Montana, with headquarters on the trail creek and since becoming a resident of Montana in 1885 he has also conspicuously identified with the political life of the commonwealth. Mr. O'Neill was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, December 1864 but was reared near Lawerence, Kansas, where his father, James O'Neill owned a large Galloway Stock Farm. The senior O'Neill was born in Valcartier, Province of Quebec. He married in early life to Margaret Ryan, who was born in Tipperary, Ireland. From Kansas, James and Margaret O'Neill went to Saline County, Missouri, where Mr. James O'Neill spent the rest of his life there and his widow, subsequently passed away in Custer County, Miles City, Montana. Their children: John, who died without issue, James E., a wholesales merchant at Butte, MT. , Thomas died before marriage, William married Julia Devaney of Saline County, MO., Mary E. a resident of Butte, MT. a suffrage leader of the state. Frank Daniel: remained at the parental home until about 1882 or 1883 at the age of 18 or 19, when he made his way to Nebraska, then on to Oregon and Washington to California and finally to Montana. He had spent about one year as a laborer on ranches in the vicinity of Stockton, California. It was in April 1885, at 21, that he came into the territory of Montana from California, traveling over the Northern Pacific Railroad. He had little knowledge of the country he was entering and was seeking work. He first worked as a sheep herder for Oscar Gruell., whose ranch was located on the "Froze-to-Death Creek", north of Yellowstone. During a period of three years he worked at herding and shearing sheep and then entered the sheep business for himself, starting the industry as a half owner with Aron Laney in 1,000 head near the mouth of the Mizpah on the Powder River and he remained identified with the range of that region until he established his headquarters on Trail Creek in 1888. He continued associated with Mr. Laney for two years, then entering the business alone. In 1913 he gave up the sheep business and instead raised Herfords under the "ON" and 3 bar gate" brand. Frank entered his homestead at the mouth of Trail Creek also an additional homestead, containing 1000 acres along Powder River. Frank, Charles and his sister were in wholesale and livestock business together. In Custer County, Montana, 10/21/1901 Frank married Miss Margaret C. McKenzie. Her father, John G. McKenzie brought his family from, Stillwater, Minnesota to Montana in 1892, locating at Miles City, Montana. He was in the hotel business there, his death occurred; however on the O'Neill ranch when he reached the age of 80 yrs. and his widow passed away there a few years later. They were the parents of three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Kenneth McLean of Miles, City, Alexander G. whose home is in Salt Lake, Mrs W.T. Perman, of Glendive, MT, Margaret McKenzie was born in Stillwater, Minnesota, Fay W. and Royal McKenzie, the youngest two live at Powder River. Frank and Margaret had six children, Aileen, Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Emmett and Roma. Frank was elected to the 13 Montana Legislature where he served under Speaker McDonald. The about4
Note* | From the book, "Progressive Men of Montana": In the picturesque little hill city of Guelph, county of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Frank D. O'Neill was born December 18, 1864. His father, James O'Neill, was likewise born in Canada, whither his father emigrated from Ireland about the year 1820. James O'Neill engaged in agricultural pursiuits in the province of Ontario and was also proprietor of a hotel in Guelph for a number of years. In 1867 he removed to Jefferson, Kansas and here raised Durham cattle and Cotswold sheep as his specialy, and later located in Saline County, Missouri where he gave his attentin to agriculture. His wife, whose maiden name was Margaret Ry an, was born in Ireland, whence she accompanied her parents on their removal to Canada when a mere child. James O'Neill died in Missouri in 1890 and his widow now resides in Miles City. They became parents of six children, of whom the subject of this review was the youngest, and one of the four yet living. Frank D. O'Neill received his early education in the public schools of Kansas, to which state his parents had removed when he was but three years of age, and thereafter he remained at the parental home until nineteen years of age. In 1884 he went to California, where he remained one year, at the expiration of which time he came to Montana, locating in Custer county, where he took up a shepherd's staff and sheep shears, and later a tract of land on Powder River, now having a well improved ranch of 5,000 acres, and also having access to an almost unlimited open range. Here he has been extensively engaged in the sheep business, running at the present time about 10,000 head. His ranch is located forty-five miles southeast of Miles City, whre he maintains his residence during the greater portion of the year, having an attractive home of modern design and conveniences. In his political allegiance Mr. O'Neill has ever been stanchly arrayed in support of the Democratic central committe of Custer county for the past ten years, while for two terms he held membership in the state central committee, having been identified with the same in 1900, when a dissaffected element in the rans of the organization attempted to disrupt the party in Montana at the state convention, held in the city of Butte. Mr. O'Neill was the Democratic candidate for representative of his county in the lower house of the state legislature, at the election of November 1900, but was defeated by a small majority. He has been a member of the state board of sheep commisssioners since 1898. In his fraternal relations our subject is a popular member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellow, the Ancient Order of the United Workmen and also the Knights of the Maccabees. On the 21st of October, 1901, Mr. O'Neill ws united in marriage to Miss Ina McKenzie, who was born in Minnesota and reared in Montana, having been a successful and popular teacher in the public schools of Miles City prior to marriage. She is the daughter of John G. and Margaret McKenzie, natives respectively of Scotland and New Brunswick, and now residents of Miles City.5

(Witness) Will | 13 October 1841 | John O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; 13th October 1841 Last Will and Probate of John O’Neill From: Quebec Archives Holographic Will Collection On the thirteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and forty one, I, John O’Neil undersigned being sick and weak in body but of sound mind, memory, and understanding and not knowing when it may please God to call me out of this world do make constituted and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following to wit: 1st I bequeath my soul to Almighty God hoping that he will receive in his great mercy and forgive me my sins. 2nd I leave my body to the earth from whence it was taken hoping that my loving wife and children will give me a Christian burial. 3rd I leave all my immoveable property to my two sons Thomas and James O’Neil to be enjoyed together by them in common as long as they shall live together and if it happens that they separate, the landed property will be divided equally between them according to its value by two or three arbitrators; provided that my dear wife Judith Duffy be decently kept and supported by them as long as she shall choose to live with them, or if she wishes to live by herself, they will provide the following support for her as long as she lives, viz: They will give her two acres of land upon which they will build a house and a stable; provide her with a cow which must be replaced in case of death and furnish fother or forage for her cow and cultivate her piece of ground. Moreover they will give her each of them yearly the sum of three pounds currency. 4th I leave all my stock of cattle and all my moveable property to my said two sons equally, on conditions that they will give to my daughter Sera O’Neil two cows and the foal I have at present at the time of her marriage and likewise two cows to each of my other daughters, Margaret and Catharine O’Neil at the time of their marriage; and if any of them do not marry I hope they will live in peace with their Brothers who will be obliged to furnish them with a home in case of sickness and take care of them accordingly. 5th My will is that the eight pounds which are due to John Wilson shall be paid on demand. I recommend all my children to be obedient and loving to their mother and agreeable among themselves and my eldest son Thomas is to be considered the conductor of affairs after my death and I recommend my other children to be submissive to him. The above, I do declare to be my last will and testament which I have heard read and have signed in presence of the witness viz the Reverend H. Paisley, Ferdinand Murphy and James Donohoe who have also signed with me. Done and passed in my dwelling home at Valcartier on the day and year aforesaid two words raized are null, two words in the margin are good. “John O’Neill” “H. Paisley, priest” “Ferdinand Murphy” “James Donohoe” ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Transcribed by Patricia Balkcom, March 2011 My notes: Burial records, three weeks after the will was written, state that John was 48 years old. It appears that he was ill for sometime – since he had written the will three weeks before he died and at a relatively young age. Did he have consumption (tuberculosis)? When he died he left Julia, his wife, and seven surviving children, aged 11 through 27. The two eldest children, Elizabeth (married to John Wilson), and Bridget (married to Thomas Cassin) are not mentioned in the will presumably because they had already married and had husbands to care for them. The two boys, Thomas and James, who were left the land, were 21 and 18 when their father died. James sold his portion of the land to Thomas, five years later, in 1846. We have found James in Guelph, Ontario records by 1855. It is possible that he left Quebec after the land sale to find another type of work. Thomas, kept the land until 1864, he, his wife (Bridget Martin) and children and his mother, Julia, had relocated to Little River in 1863. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Proved before me at Quebec this 27th of November 1855. “J. Signed: James O’Neill Thos. O’Neill E. G. Cannon, Notary Henry C. Austin, Notary Transcribed by Patricia Balkcom, 4 January 2011 My Notes: John had two surviving sons, Thomas, aged 26 and James, aged 23 at the time this document was written. Why is James selling his part of the inheritance? We know that in the early 1850s James moved to Guelph, Ontario and bought a hotel. It’s possible that he did not want to farm and hoped to live in a more populated area. It’s also possible that he left Quebec shortly after this document was written. There is a note on the document that states “Expedie a Mr. James O’Neill, 21st January 1850”. The first word is difficult to read but it is possible this was a French term for “sent to”. Although the first piece of land mentioned in the document is not numbered, I believe it to be Lot #23, the lot that was supposed to be for John’s brother James, who it appears never made it from Ireland. The other piece of land was Lot #22 given to John when he arrived about 1819.5 |

Note* | 17 September 1870 | Sarcoxie, Jefferson County, Kansas, United States; The Kansas State Historical Society's "City Notes": SHEEP: Mr. James O'Neill residing seven miles west of Johnson County, Tonganoxie, brought a flock of twenty-five head, several which he has already sold. Mr. O'Neill moved to this state, from Canada, a few years ago, (before 1870, for the purpose of engaging in the importation and raising of fine stock. He has lately brought on a car load of fine Leicester and Costwold sheep, besides a car of fine cattle and several head of Berkshire pigs. Mr. O'Neill is the kind of man we like to see come to Kansas, for there are the men upon whom we must rely for the full development of our great resources as an agricultural and stock growing state. A visit to the sheep he has now on exhibition, would more than repay the admission fee to the Fair-Ground. Those wishing to provide themselves with his flock will find him ready to dispose of them. Relationship | 3rd great-granduncle of Patricia Ann Monogue |
Father | (?) O'Neill1 |
Birth* | say 1795 | Ireland |
Land* | 11 May 1819 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; The following excerpt from a land petition written on 11 May 1819 states: "The petion of John O'Neil of Valcartier, yeoman, on behalf of James O'Neil, his brother. That the said James O'Neil sailed from Ireland for this country some time in the last month with a view of obtaining lands and settling as a farmer to which business he has been brought up in his native country..." The petition goes on to request 180 acres on the north eastern side of the river Jacques Cartier - the same requested area by John O'Neil for himself.2 |
Land | 11 October 1819 | John O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Request of James and John O'Neil addressed to Lewis [Louis] Foy for lots 18, 19, 22 and 23 located in the fifth concession in St. Gabriel. On the back of the letter, we can see that Lot 22 was promised to O'Neill himself, and that Lot 23 should be reserved for his brother. However, lot 19 appears to have been granted to Edward Sweeny.1 |
Note* | In the initial request to reserve land for his brother, John, stated that James sailed in April 1819. However, it appears that by October, 1819, he still has not arrived. Also, at this point I have not been able to find James in future Valcartier records, so the question is, did he ever come to Canada and if so, where did he go? One descendant states that her grandfather, Joseph Albert O'Neill, told her that James lived in Montreal with his family.3 |

Birth* | between 1792 and 1793 | County Kildare, Leinster Province, Ireland; This date of birth is based on the "age of 48" on his gravestone. The place of birth is also on the stone. In coming up with a birthdate we have little to go on with John since he died before any of the censuses that listed a person's age were taken. His gravestone states he was 48 (died 07 Nov. 1841), so this would mean he was born between Nov. 1792 and Nov. 1793. However, church burial record states he was 51 which would push back the birthdate to Nov. 1789 - Nov. 1790. My best guess is that he was born 1790-1793. Given Julia’s age, it would make more sense if he was born in 1790 but it is hard to dispute an age on a gravestone, although we have seen mistakes on stones before.3,4 |
Marriage* | between 1812 and 1814 | Judith Duffy; Ireland5,4 |
Immigration* | circa April 1818 | Judith Duffy; The following excerpt from a land petition written on 11 May 1819 states: "That your petitioner left Ireland and arrived in this Country in the last spring with the view of obtaining lands and settling as a farmer to which business he had been brought up in his native country..."6 |
Land | 11 May 1819 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Land petition excerpt: "your petitioner is informed that there is a considerable tract of good land which is ungranted in the Seigniory of St. Gabriel lying on the North Eastern bank of the river Jacques Cartier bounded on the one side by the lands of John Neilson and Andrew Stuart, Esquires, and on the other side by the line of the said Seigniory of St. Gabriel. That if your Honors would be pleased to grant unto your Petitioner a lot of one hundred and eighty acres your petitioner would immediately move his wife and family hither and make a settlement theron..."6 |
Land* | 11 October 1819 | James O'Neill; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Request of James and John O'Neil addressed to Lewis [Louis] Foy for lots 18, 19, 22 and 23 located in the fifth concession in St. Gabriel. On the back of the letter, we can see that Lot 22 was promised to O'Neill himself, and that Lot 23 should be reserved for his brother. However, lot 19 appears to have been granted to Edward Sweeny.7 |
Land* | 13 October 1819 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Lot #22 is granted to John and Lot #23 is "reserved for his brother in Europe". No mention in this document of Lot #18 or 19.8 |
Land | 30 October 1820 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; Statement to the Commissioners of the Jesuit Estates of Henry Dalton, John Singst, John Sinclair and William Carigan, to the effect that John O'Neill (O'Nails, O'Nil) cut 18 acres of wood lots 22 and 23 in the fifth concession of the manor St. Gabriel.9 |
Land | 8 December 1820 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "Resolved that deeds of concession be granted to the undermentioned individuals of the lots of land in the Seigneury of St. Gabriel set opposite to their names list. John O’Neill lot No. 22 in the Fifth Range."10 |
Census | 1821 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; There was a Census taken for Valcartier in 1821 and John is listed as living on Concession #4 with 2 houses (this possibly means a house and a barn). This is somewhat confusing because in previous and future documents, there is no evidence that he lived in the 4th Concession, only in the 5th. The Census goes on to say that John has 1 male child, 2 female children, and 3 male servants. These servants are likely men that he has hired to help him clear the land. He owns a horse, 4 oxen, 6 cows and 4 cows and he has now cleared 30 acres on the 4th Concession and 2o acres on the 5th Concession.11 Witness: Elizabeth O'Neill Witness: Bridget O'Neill Witness: Thomas O'Neill Witness: Judith Duffy |
Land Petition* | 13 November 1822 | Edward Sweeney; St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; To the worshipful the Commissioners for managing the Estates of the late Order of Jesuits in Canada The Petition of James Sweeney and John O’Neil of Valcartier Humbly (?) that your petitioners are settled on lots of ground adjoining to four vacant lots in the first Concession of the Seigniory of St. Gabriel, which they have found to be for the most part an (?) swamp which is but in a few parts arable. That your petitioners, in consequence of the lots not being distinctly laid out have made some improvements on the said lots in the firm belief that they were improving their own property. Therefore your petitioners humbly pray that your worships will be pleased to take the whole case into their consideration and grant to them the before mentioned 4 Lots in the First Concession of St. Gabriel south side of the River which they have in part cleared and improved as aforesaid …. Census* | 1824 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; "John Oneil", Family #50, age 33, 3 males (assume this to be John, and sons, Thomas and James) and 5 females in his house (assume this to be Julia, and three daughters, Elizabeth, Bridget and Sarah - who is the other female?), settlement date 1818, has 87 arpents (almost 87 acres) under cultivation (one of the largest number in the settlement). Includes: 30 minots of oats, 4 minots of peas, 60 minots of potatoes, 2 arpents sown in turnips, 16 arpents in timothy, 1/2 arpent each in hemp and flax. He has 3 cows, 2 pigs, and 1 gelding. He produced 100 minots of wheat, 400 minots of potatoes, 200 minots of turnips, 1000 bundles of hay and clover, 4 minots of carrots, and 500 lbs. of butter. He has peas in production but they are still green and have not been harvested.13 Witness: Judith Duffy Witness: Elizabeth O'Neill Witness: Bridget O'Neill Witness: Thomas O'Neill Witness: Mary Sarah O'Neill Witness: James O'Neill |

There was also a bush lot that adjoined this lot #890 which belonged to the O'Neill family. Lot #340 was sold to Samuel Harriet when Thomas O'Neill and his wife moved to Little River.)14 |

Will* | 13 October 1841 | St-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec County, Quebec, Canada; 13th October 1841 Last Will and Probate of John O’Neill From: Quebec Archives Holographic Will Collection On the thirteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and forty one, I, John O’Neil undersigned being sick and weak in body but of sound mind, memory, and understanding and not knowing when it may please God to call me out of this world do make constituted and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following to wit: 1st I bequeath my soul to Almighty God hoping that he will receive in his great mercy and forgive me my sins. “J. B. Parkin”, A.I.L.C. Province of Canada, District of Quebec Before me, the Honorable John Buckworth Parkin, one of the Assistant Judges of the Superior Court for Lower Canada, personally came and appeared Ferdinand Murphy and James Donohoe, both of the Seigniory of St. Gabriel de Valcartier, farmers, who being severally and respectively duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God do respectively make oath and say that they were personally present as witnesses to the execution of the Last Will and Testament of the late John O’Neill, hereunto annexed (sic), in his lifetime of St. Gabriel de Valcartier aforesaid, farmer, bearing date the thirteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty one, and beginning with the words “on the thirteenth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and forty one” and concluding with the words “Done and passed in my dwelling home at Valcartier on the day and year aforesaid, two words raized are nul, two works in the margin are good”. That the said late John O’Neill declared and acknowledged to deponents respectively that the signature “John O’Neill” at the foot of the said last will and Testament was his signature and the said signature was by the said John O’Neill signed in presence of deponents; that the signature “H.
