She was born September 11, 1963 in Wausau, daughter of Harry C. Spanton III and LuAnn (Opper) Spanton. On August 12, 1995, she married Michael J. Luhtala in Wausau.

Cathy was employed at Liberty Mutual Insurance as Director of Product Analysis until her retirement in January 2021. She was a volunteer for Wausau Area Mobile Meals and enjoyed traveling, cooking, watching movies, reading, listening to music and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family especially during the holidays. She loved making Thanksgiving dinner for her extended family.

Survivors include, her loving husband of 26 years, Michael; her parents, Harry III and LuAnn Spanton, Weston; two children, James (Jana) Schneider, Sturgeon Bay and Samantha Schneider, Wausau; four grandchildren, Mckenzie Daoust, Noah and Chimaira Schneider and Liam Yates; three brothers, Luke (Monica) Spanton, Germantown, Mark Spanton, San Francisco, CA and Tom (Carolina) Spanton, Yuma, AZ; her mother-in-law, Sandra (Mike) Volhard, Wausau; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Oliver Luhtala.

A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held in the Spring of 2022 at Peterson/Kraemer Funeral Home, 1302 Sixth Street, Wausau.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Froedtert Center For Advanced Care and the staff at Aspirus Cancer Care for the outstanding care and support for Cathy and her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) in Cathy’s name.4

She is survived by her son Larry and his wife Linda and children, as well as her daughter-in-law Carol Holton and family and daughter Janice and husband Ken Mack and family. She will also be missed by her niece Lori (Don), as well as nephew Ross (Kathy). As very special thanks goes to lifelong family friend Joann Lough for the undying love and support she gave to Mom for many years. You are a very special person to our family. There are many friends who took the time to see Mom at Deer Lodge. Thank you so much for your kindness. Mom was blessed to have 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Any time a new picture was made available she showed it with much happiness and pride. Mom was affectionately know as “Gran” to all who loved her.She always had time for a game of cards and a sip or two. Taking a quarter from her in a game of cards was a risky undertaking. After Dad’s passing in 2008, Mom moved into Sturgeon Creek II where she made many great friends. There was a special group known as the “Girls”. Thank you for the special friendships you had. Our family will now keep our faith that there is a better place and Mom is reunited with loved ones. The staff at Deer Lodge 4 west was wonderful. Thanks for your compassion. Mom’s wishes did not include a service. A private family gathering has taken place. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of choice. You were one of the best Mom.2

Parents were Frank Squibb of England and Hannah Sweeney of Canada. Cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage of 7 days duration, contributory cause bronchial pneumonia of 4 days duration. Information was provided by his sister, Mrs. J. F. Cummings of 263 Wexford Ave., in Hamilton. He was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Brantford and the funeral home was Gorley and Dermody in Hamilton.2

Dora Irish, 15 years old, sister of Edna, same address, same scene of drowning. While bathing in Pettibone Lake at Ford's Club camp, eight miles south of Holly, Mich., and not far from the scene of Oats' drowning, two sisters, Edna and Dora Irish, 14 and 15 years old respectively of Wattles Corner, Troy township, were drowned when they stepped into a deep portion of the lake. Neither girl could swim, and both went down before any of a dozen or more startled picnickers could rescue them. The accident happened at 6pm, just an hour or so after the Oats' drowning in Cass Lake. Late last night Oakland county authorities were still dragging for the bodies. Ford's Camp is said to be a picnic camp grouds used by employees of the Highland Park plant of the Ford Motor company..."4

That I made diligent and careful search in all places where the deceased usually kept his papers and in his depositories in order to ascertain whether the deceased had left any Will but I have been able to discover any will, codicil or testamentary papers and I believe that the deceased died without having left any Will, codicil or Testamentary papers whatsoever.
4. That since the death of the deceased I have taken stock of all the assets belonging to the estate and find that they are less than the labilities so that the estate will not pay the conditions in full and there will be nothing for any of the heirs of the deceased.
