He was living with his father, Patrick Cassin, his next of kin at 370 Wentworth Street South in Hamilton, Ontario. He was born in Quebec on the 17 June 1898 (baptismal records state 1899) and was currently a student and single. He agreed to be vaccinated and had never been in the armed forces before and agreed to serve in the C.E.F. He signed his name William James Cassin. (The 173rd Battalion sailed to England in November, 1916 where on January 4, 1917 it was absorbed into the 2nd Reserve Battalion. The 173rd Battalion had one Officer Commanding: Lieut-Col. W. H. Bruce.) When he enlisted, his medical exam stated that he was apparently 18 years, 10 months old and was 5 ft. 9 in. tall. He had blue eyes and brown hair and his chest when fully expanded measured 36 inches with a 3 inch range of expansion. He stated he was Roman Catholic, a student and born in Quebec. He had a scar below his right knee and one on the knuckle of his index finger, also one on his right arm resembling a vaccination mark. He was declared fit for duty. He was discharged one week later on April 17th as it was discovered that he was actually only 16 years, 10 months old.5 |

The remains were brought out from Milwaukee last Monday morning and interred in the St. Francis Cemetery, the funeral service being held in the church. A large number of friends and sympathizers followed the remains out from Milwaukee and to the grave. (The Cedarburg Weekly News (Ozaukee County) Wednesday, June 22, 1887: A mistake was made in last week's NEWS in the obituary notice of Mr. J. Bellew's daughter. The name should have been Mrs. W.T. Cassin. We beg pardon for the error) Death Registration #1566 states: Mary Cassin, white, female, age 24 years, 10 months, 13 days, daughter for John and Bridget Bellew, housewife, born Cedarburg, Ozaukee, Wi. Wife of William Cassin. Born 29 July 1862, died 11 June 1889 of consumption. Died in Milwaukee and buried in Cedarburg.5,6 |

A working farm was part of the building to provide meaningful work for those living there and as a way to subsidize the asylum. William was one of the first patients admitted to the hospital.5 |
