However, the records of the Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia provideds the following transcription of his baptism:
"Cassin, Stephen of John and Ann Cassin, born Feb. 10, baptized March 7, in Chester County, sponsors James & Mary Ryan."1,2,3,4

Military*1814"Stephen Cassin...who m. Margaretta Abernethy, entered the navy as midshipman Feb. 21, 1800; became a lieutenant Feb. 12, 1807; master Sept. 11, 1814; captain Mar. 3, 1825. He served with distinction in the war with Tripoli. He commanded the 'Ticonderoga' in Macdonough's victory on Lake Champlain, and was rewarded by Congress with a gold medal for bravery in that action. He was a terror to the pirates that infected the West Indies, and captured four of their vessels on 28 and 29 Sept. 1822 (original source Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography). He d. 8, 29, 1857 in Georgetown, D. C."
Another source regarding the Ticonderoga - "17 guns, the third heaviest ship in the Navy. His gallant performance in the battle - fighting off many assaults and boarding attempts while exposing himself to heavy fire - was credited by later naval historians with contributing greatly, perhaps decisively, to victory on that day."3,7 
Note*October 1814Stephen Cassin received the Congressional Gold Medal. Text of Congressional Gold Medal resolution:
"Resolved, That the President of the United States be requested to cause gold medals to be struck, emblematical of the action between the two squadrons, and to present them to Captain Macdonough and Captain Robert Henley, and also to Lieutenant Stephen Cassin, in such manner as may be most honourable to them; and that the President be further requested to present a silver medal, with suitable emblems and devices, to each of the commissioned officers of the navy and army serving on board, and a sword to each of the midshipmen and sailing masters, who so nobly distinguished themselves in that memorable conflict."

Obituary*1 September 1857"Commodore Stephen Cassin died at his residence in Georgetown, D.C. on Saturday in the 70th year ofhis age. He entered theNavy fifty-seven years ago, when a boy and served under Perry at the naval battle of Lake Erie, where he distinguished himself, and was promoted. He was a terror to the pirates who infested the Atlantic Ocean and on the 28th and 29th of September 1822, he captured five pirate vessels. He also commanded the Ticonderoga, under Commodore McDonough, on Lake Chaplain in 1814. In consequence of ill health he had seen but eleven years' sea service and was on the reserved list at the time of his death."7

My comments: Patrick Reynolds, son of Peter Reynolds and Brigitt Donnelly is married to Jean Nicols in Loretteville, Quebec in 1826 and one of the witnesses is Mary Henney. So somehow, his parents must be related to either Elijah Haney or Mary Dutch.8

Be it remembered that on the twenty third day of July1836 in the sixth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord William the Fourth by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, before me the undersigned one of the Justices of Our Sovereign Lord the King assigned to keep the Peace within the District of Quebec, residing in the Settlement of Val Cartier in the said District appeared and were personally present Hebert Haney, Thomas Cassin, William Corrigan and James Donohoo, all of the said Settlement of Val Cartier and acknowledge themselves to owe and be indebted to our said Sovereign Lord the King to wit the said H. Haney and Thomas Cassin each in the sum of thirty pounds sterling money of Great Britain and the said William Corrigan and James Donohoo each in the sum of thirty pounds sterling money aforesaid each to be respectively made and levied of their several goods and chattels, lands and tenements to the use of o9ur said Sovereign Lord the King, His Heirs and Successors if the said H. Haney and Thomas Cassin shall fail in performing the conditions herein underwritten. The conditions of this Recognizance is such that if the above named H. Haney and Thomas Cassin shall personally appear at the next General Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the said District of Quebec to be begun and holden in the City of Quebec on the (left blank) day of (left blank) next and from day to day during the said Session to do and receive what shall then and there be enjoined by the Court without ??? shall not depart from the Court and in the meantime shall keep the Peace and be of good behavior towards our Sovereign Lord the King and all and every the ??? people of our Sovereign Lord the Kind and more especially towards James Ryder, Shoemaker, Val Cartier in the said District of Quebec then that the present Recognizance shall be null and void but otherwise shall be and remain in full force and virtue.

This same piece of property was sold by a Sherrif's sale in January. It had been seized from Denis Cassin (oldest son of Michael) and then bought back by Michael. This is the transcription of the notary record.

On this day the fifth of February one thousand eight hundred and forty two,
Before us the undersigned notaries public residing in the City of Quebec personally came and appeared Michael Cassan of Valcartier, farmer, who in consideration of the love and affection which he hath and beareth to and for his son Thomas Cassan and also for other good causes and considerations him hereunto moving, hath given, granted and confirmed and beg the ??? doth givings ??? confirm ??? in the best manner and way that a donation and gift inter ??? can be made, with warranty against all troubles whatsoever unto the said Thomas Cassan. He was present and accepting for himself his heirs and assigns.
That is to say the lot No four situate in the parish of St. Ambroise in the Seigneury of St. Gabriel of three arpents in front by thirty arpents in depth in the south concession of the said Fief or Seigneury of St. Gabriel with thirty acres cleared, with a good house and dairy together with all singulars the appurtenances and dependancies thereunto belonging as the whole is now and with which the said Thomas Cassan do thus declare himself content and satisfied.
To have and to hold the said lot of land and premises unto him the said Thomas Cassan his heirs and assigns to his own proper use behold of and benefit from hence forth forever subject nevertheless to the payment for the future of such rent seigneurial
rights seigneurial ??? and dues as may be payable for the same to the domain of St. Gabriel in who ??? and ??? (in the margin: ???that the said Thomas Cassan obliges and binds himself to pay a ???) the said lot and premises are situated warranted free and clear of arrears up to this day, except the said lot of land and premises belonging to the said Michael Cassan by purchase by him made from the Sheriff of this District of Quebec when the same was seized and sold at the suit of John William Worlsey of this City of Quebec, Esquire against Denis Cassan of Valcartier Settlement as appears by the Sheriff title hearing date at Quebec the twenty seventh day of January one thousand eight hundred and forty two.
The present gift and donation thus made free and gratuitous XXXX XXXX gratitude in consideration
as aforesaid of the natural love and affection which the said Michael Cassan hath and beareth to the said Thomas Cassan and further because such is his will and for the due execution of these presents the said Michael Cassan did and by these presents doth transfer and set over unto the said Thomas Cassan all rights of property claim, title, interest, demands and all and every other rights of what nature or kind so ever which he can have pretense to or demand upon the above described and given premises of all which he did and doth hereby deseize and desist himself to and in favor of the said Thomas Cassan his heirs and assigns agreeing that he be and remain therein
and thereof seized and invested with full and entire possession thereof forever by virtue of these presents.
And lastly in order to cause these presents to be duly registerd, enrigistrees where it may be required the said parties have constituted and appointed the bearer thereof to whom they give and grant full power and authority to that effect for this ???.

Discharge Certificate on June 13, 1919: This is to certify that #875476, Private Thomas James Cassin enlisted i the 184th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg on the 24th day of May 1916. He served in France with CASC and is now discharge...by reason of demobilization. He is 33 years old, 5'10.5", dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair and on the third finger of his right hand he is missing it above the second joint.

Additional Medical Information from May 12, 1919 - Weight - 170 lb., Nutrition: poor; pulse - 70 and regular, vision both eyes: 6/6; hearing both ears for normal conversatonal voice: 21 ft; lost part of finger as a child, accidental; had typhoid fever when he was 15 years of age with porr recovery. He was listed as a "outside limits" which indicated that on the night of the Census which was ordered to be taken on January 11th, he spent the night in St. Edmond.3,4

At the age of sixteen he was employed to help build a railroad to the west. He reached Winnipeg in 1871 and was then hired as foreman of the Strevels Construction Company to build a railroad line from Winnipeg to Manitou. Thomas Sr. then managed the old Stuart House in Manitou, which he later purchased and renamed it - The Cassin House. In 1880, he married Ellen McDermott in St. Boniface, Manitoba and took his bride to Manitou. They lived in the hotel for 35 years, raising six children there, namely: Frank, Tom Jr. , Kathryn (who died as a small child), Mary, Charles, and Josephine.
Around 1891, the hotel was gutted by fire and Thomas Sr. acquired land in Kaleida on which to farm while the hotel was being rebuilt In 1913 Frank succeeded his father in the hotel business for a few years. The hotel was then sold and Thomas Sr. and Ellen were engaged in farming in Kaleida. Thomas Sr. died in 1928 and Ellen in 1944.
When Thomas Jr. was discharged from the Army in 1919, his brothers and sisters had moved from Manitou and he acquired the far. In 1922 he married Janet (Jean) Carswell and they lived in the Kaleida District until they retired to Manitou in 1949. They had one daughter, Helen, who married Cecil Kidd. They have two sons, Garry and Jack.
The Kaleida home was a second home to all the brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren for many years. Cherished memories of dear friends and shared happiness still remain with all of us. (Written in 1985 by Lorraine (Cassin) Rebbeck."2

Occupation*1894Manitou, Pembina Valley Region, Manitoba, Canada; It is not clear as to when exactly in the 1880s that Thomas became involved with the Stewart House (located at the corner of Main & Ellis East). However, this information is available from the Manitou historical book, In Rhythm With Our Roots (edited by Vedden & Webb): "In 1894 fire broke out in the Hudson's Bay Store Warehouse. The Stewart House was separate from the burning store by a space of twenty or thirty feet but caught fire due to its height. The hotel burned down. With the insurance money forthcoming, a new hotel was built. Mr. Cassin leased the Dufferin House, while the new hotel was being built in 1894 and 1895. The new hotel was named "The Cassin House", after its owner. In 1895 the Manitou Mercury describes the finishing touches to this new hotel: 'The work in connection with the construction of the Cassin House has been completed, and the house is now being furnished. The structure is one of the finest hotel buildings in Southern Manitoba. The dimensions are 52' x 52', three stories hight with stone basement the full size of foundation. The basement is divided into compartments containing the sample rooms, pool room, furnace room, cistern, refrigerator and root cellars. On the first flat are a commodious dining room, reading room and office, kitchen, washroom, hall and stairway. The second story contains a large parlor, linen closet, bathrooms and twelve bedrooms. All the rooms are particularly well-lighted, bright and cheery. The woodwork throughout is of British Columbia fir and cedar, the beautiful grain of the wood showing to splendid advantage. The structure has a Mansard roof (a four-sided roof with to slopes on each side) surmounted by a tower and flag staff, and is fifty feet high from bottom of basement to top of roof. The building has been fitted with a system of electric bells, and a balcony and verandah extends along the front. Mr. Kerr had the contract for supplying the furniture and will fit up the rooms with an elegant assortment of oak-finished parlor and bedroom suites, a carload having been received for that purpose this week from Kincardine. The brick and stone work and plastering was done by Mr. Lamb of Winnipeg, the carpenter work by Mr. Hunter of Miami, and the painting by Mr. Spencer of Morden. Mr. and Mrs. Cassin are having the rooms carpeted and furnished as quickly as possible, and the Cassin House which is selected for the new hotel, will be open for the reception of the guests in a short time.'
Thomas Cassin turned over the management of this elite edifice to Frank Cassin. The establishment catered to public and political functions. However, with the coming of prohibition there must have been financial difficulties because in the fall of 1916 the entire contents were auctioned off including 168 blocks of ice, all furnishings, one old horse, one moosehead,' according to the Western Canadian.
The next mention of the hotel in the Western Canadian is in the January 23, 1918 edition: 'The Pembina House is the name of the hotel in Manitou now. The old name of the Cassin House disappears, under the proprietorship of Alexander Smith.'
....The Manitou Hotel continued as a hotel until March 31, 1959 when it burned down."9

He is not a polygamist, anarchist, and has never been in prison or an almhouse. He is not travelling for purpose of employment. He is 5'8" tall, fair complexion, weighs 159 pounds and has brown eyes. He does not have a bag with him. The appliction contains his signature. It appears that Thomas is living at 160 Magoza Street but it is difficult to read the street name. It appears that his age is stated incorrectly - he would have been 63 at the time.9

Cassin of Delaware (County) to Miss Elizabeth H. Sharpless of Port Kennedy." There is a descrepancy in the the year of this marriage - one record states (Sharpless Family History) 1852 and the church record states 1854. The Quaker records imply that the marriage took place before 1853. Also there is a note in one of the Quaker Records that the marriage was to Martha Clayton. It appears that this was a mistake and that is was to Elizabeth Sharpless.8,9,10,11

Cassin has been furnished with a copy of the testimony and does not incline to appeal. It is directed to be recorded and is as follows - Thomas W. Cassin, having had a birthright of education among Friends has so far deviated from our good order and principals as to keep company with and accomplish his marriage with a woman not in membership with Friends by the assistance of an ____ minister, for which he has been visited by a member of a committee of this meeting. Believing him not rightly qualified to condemn the course he has taken, we testify against his conduct and disown him from a right of membership with us until he becomes rightly prepared to condemn his deviation which we earnestly desire he may."5

The Massachusetts Death Record states that he died on this date, age as listed above, of "Aneurism of the Aorta" and that he died on Pleasant Street in Brookline. Occupation was Surgeon in the Navy. It states he was born in Concord, PA to Thomas W. & Katherine Cassin, both born in PA.6,16 
Anecdote*1879From a biographical sketch written in 1879, Jackson County, Iowa: "THOMAS W. CASSIN, farmer, Sec. 6; P. O. Bellevue; born Dec. 28, 1818, in Philadelphia; in 1852, he came to Jackson Co., and settled in Tete des Mortes Township; in 1867, he removed to Jackson Township, and settled on his present farm; he owns 405 acres land; he has held most of the township offices. Married Elizabeth Sharpless in 1851; she was born in Montgomery. Co., Penn.; had six children; their son, Charles, went through a regular course of pharmacy in Philadelphia, there graduated; he then entered the Medical University of Pennsylvania; graduated as a physician, when he entered the United States Navy as Pass Surgeon, which position he held till the time of his death, which occurred in 1877, aged 26 years. Mr. Cassin is one of the leading farmers of Jackson Co.; his fine residence is situated six miles from Bellevue, and the "latch-string is always out." His home is a favorite resort for young and old; he is of a quiet, but genial disposition, and excels in practical good sense; his friends claim that he has the ability to fill important political stations, but he disclaims all taste or desire for politics. He is a sound Republican."9 
Will*27 February 1894Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, United States; I, Thomas W. Cassin, of the City of Maquoketa, Iowa, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby publish and declare the following to be my last will and testament, that is to say:
1st - I give, devise, and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Cassin, all my real estate absolutely in fee simple, wherever situated.
2nd - I give and bequeath to my daughters, namely, Fannie Goodenow, Anna Dorchester, Ella Cundill and Lizzie Cassin, each the sum of two thousand dollars, and I direct that any debts due, or owing me from either of them at the time of my death shall be applied toward the payment of the respection legacy herein bequeathed to such legatee.
3rd - I give and bequeath to my son Horace Cassin all debts owing by him to me, whether evidenced by notes or otherwise.
4th - I give and bequeath to my daughter, Josephine Burgess all debts owing to me by herself or her husband, W. H. Burgess, whether evidenced by notes or otherwise.
5th - I give, devise, and bequeath to my wife, Elizabeth Cassin, all the rest residue and remainder of my estate of whatever kind or nature, the said bequests in this will made to my wife being in lieu of her dower, or share of my estate, to which she would by law otherwise be entitled.
6th - I hereby appoint my said wife Elizabeth cassin, executrix of this my last will and testament, and hereby exempt her from giving bond as such executrix, or filing any inventory and appraisment of my estate, hereby revoking all former wills made by me.
