I desire to be buried in a suitable manner that an anniversary service be celebrated and twelve low masses said for the repose of my soul. I desire that all my debts be paid and satisfied and all the expense I may have incurred during my present sickness, the whole in conformity with Mr. Duchesnay's views, allowing over and above her daily hire or charge old Mrs. Parras the sum of twenty shillings as a present. I request Mr. Duchesnay to dispose of my clothes and furniture in favor of some poor person or persons as he may think fit. I give to the Fabrique of the Parish of Sainte Catherine, where I am living, the sum of five pounds currency. I give and bequeath unto my nephew Robert Baker the sum of twenty five pounds currency, but I do not wish him to have that sum before he shall have attained the age of twenty two years. I must remain until that time in the present debtor's hands at interest of six percent per annum. Should Mr. Duchesnay however, who has always had care and management of my monies since the death of the late Mr. Paisley, deem it advantageous for my nephew, he may pay it over to him at any time he chooses. I also leave and give unto my niece Catherine Baker the sum of seven pounds currency. Should my nephew above named turn out not to be a steady and well behaved lad, the legacy made to him will revert to my above named niece. I leave Mr. Duchesnay to judge of his behavior and request him to consult with his employer on the subject, but in any case, whatever, Mr. Duchesnay does in relation to the matter, my nephew and all others must abide by. I request that Mr. Duchesnay to see that this my last will and testament be executed according to my intent and meaning. As Frederick Hardy has had no notarial discharge from me for the payment of his obligation to me, I hereby acknowledge that he has paid me and owes me nothing whatsoever. I mention this as my private receipt might have been lost or mislaid. Should the forgoing legacies and above mentioned debts and expenses not meet the amount that I may have at my death, I wish the overplus of my monies to be paid to my nephew as before stated. (Witness) Death | 18 March 1955 | Joseph Edmond Lefebvre; Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick, Canada3 |
Occupation* | "Although she herself only lived a few years in Mission proper, Louise Lefebvre spent most of her childhood living close by on Garden Crescent in Elbow Park. Her parents had lived somewhat longer in the Mission area. She attended school at Holy Angels and St. Mary’s School, and later returned to St. Mary’s as a teacher and lived nearby in Roxboro. She remained very familiar with the area over a number of years and remembers it well. Louise’s father Harold Cullen was a lifelong railroader with the CNR, and it was employment with the company that brought him out west to Calgary. He was originally Quebec Irish. His wife was the sister of a co- worker who had come out to Calgary at the behest of the railway. Cullen remained with the CNR right up to his retirement. Louise left Calgary after marrying Joseph Lefebvre, a young Canadian Army Officer. He died in tragic circumstances in 1955, of carbon monoxide poisoning after spending the night stranded in a blizzard in his car. Although supporting herself and her children on a military widow’s pension, Louise returned to university and became a teacher, later earning a master’s degree. She taught and acted as a counsellor at St. Mary’s, and was at the school when it became co- educational."2 | |

Obituary* | 2 November 2016 | McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Calgary, Calgary Region, Alberta, Canada; March 4, 1927 – November 1, 2016 Louise Lefebvre peacefully dropped off to sleep and took her leave of us November 1, 2016. In the end she still knew us all, and although she had forgotten much, she was very much with us much of the time, right up until the last. Those who continue here in Louise’s spirit, are her three children, Anne, John (Hilary) and Ted (Gail); four grandchildren, Jesse, Emily (Pádraig), Carolyn (Phil) and Heather; great- granddaughter, Ida; a large extended family of Cullens and Lefebvres; many in-laws; old friends and new. Our Mom was born in Calgary to Harold and Florence (O’Sullivan) Cullen, Grandpa a conductor, telegrapher and stationmaster with the CNR, Grandma a secretary in a legal firm, who retired to raise their family. Mom had seven brothers and sisters, of whom Martin, Aileen (Haan), Joan, Martha and little Harry have gone before. She is survived by brothers, Cassin in Kelowna and Jack (Doris) in N. Saanich. Louise started school at Holy Angels and graduated from St Mary’s Girls’ High School. She met Lieutenant Joseph Edmund Lefebvre, PPCLI, posted at Currie Barracks, Calgary. They were married in August 1948 and had a charmed and short life together, at Camp Borden, Barrie, ON, CFB Kingston, ON and finally CFB Chatham, NB. Ed died March 18, 1955 at age 29, in tragic circumstances, of carbon monoxide poisoning, stranded while driving in a New Brunswick blizzard with three other young officers, returning from an Officers’ Training Course in Moncton. So, at 28, Mom, with three children five years and under, returned home to Calgary where she had much support from family and friends. She formed life-long friendships with her new Roxboro neighbours, the Swanns, O’Gormans, Luxfords and Blacks. For a moment of respite from single-parenting, Mom attended weekend retreats at Mt. St. Francis, Cochrane, where she met another life-long friend, Fr. Dunstan (Malcolm) MacLellan. She and we kids relished every minute we spent with Fr. Dunstan, hanging around and ‘helping’ milk cows at the Mount, fishing at Spray Lakes and along the Kananaskis River and wandering through Big Hill Springs. Louise worked at Western Airlines for a time, and then, through her old friend, Fr. Pat O’Byrne, started work at Catholic Family Services where her career aspirations began to take form and she met her dear friends, Frank and Betty Bach. Not only did Fr. Pat start Mom on her career path, he also allowed all of us precious peace, quiet and adventure of the country at his Chateau Gandolfo at Bragg Creek and greatly influenced our social and political attitudes through his Christ-like dedication to progressive social change. Mom earned a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Alberta at Calgary and landed a position teaching English at her alma mater, St Mary’s Girls’ High. She soon realized her real passion was to be a guidance counselor, a new concept at the time. So, while teaching, on weekends and in summer session, she earned her Graduate Diploma in Ed Psych from University of Calgary, completing her Master’s Degree in Education, with a specialty in Guidance Counseling through Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. Louise returned yet again to St. Mary’s Girls’ (soon thereafter amalgamated with the Boys’ School as St. Mary’s Senior High), as its first Guidance Counselor, spending most of her career there, with the final four years counseling at Bishop Grandin High, retiring in 1991. We have heard many stories of lives influenced and changed for the better, and even some lives saved because of time spent in her office. Mom has enjoyed a life full of music, literature, golf, skating, swimming and travel. Wherever people gather, there would be Mom. Our Mom was wise, generous, kind and strong, had a powerful and irreverent wit, and a great sense of fun. Many tell of Mom listening to them with empathy when others would or could not. She helped ease many through times of stress and great emotion, others, through their last months, days and moments. She celebrated peoples’ joyous times with unbounded gusto. Mom raised us to know that catholic means universal, that all souls are equal, that in the end one’s individual conscience is the final arbiter. We could not have had a more progressive social upbringing. We reaped the benefits of her enquiring and forward thinking mind, her widely varied observations and well informed and passionately held views and opinions. Mom was in every way a woman ahead of her time, and she leaves us a grand legacy as well as full hearts. A core group of Mom’s professional friends, the legendary Wine Club, has been steadfastly in her heart, her corner, her social life, her mind. They have laughed, cried, traveled and celebrated together. They first lost Peggy McCarthy too soon in life, and now have lost Mom in the fullness of hers. The family would like to acknowledge their lifelong commitment and close friendship by asking them to act as Honourary Pallbearers for Mom’s final journey. The family rains very special thanks on Louise’s guardian angel, Cid Balsino, who has been at Mom’s side and in her heart for these past 3 years. She has special place in our family. We send great thanks and appreciation to all of Mom’s caregivers, the staff at Staywell Manor, the warm staff of Sarcee Hospice who were in the end able to send Mom out the front door, the Chinook Care Centre staff who so gently tended to Mom these last 2 years, and got to know her well. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W.) on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
